Chapter 4
“Irene?” Damien raised an eyebrow, pulling away from Eva almost immediately. “What are you doing here?”
What was I doing here?
I returned to Miami to cater for an impromptu grand wedding only for the groom and bride to turn out to be my ex- husband and step-sister.
“Why are you staring like you’ve seen a ghost?” Eva snaked her arms around Damien and smirked at me.
“Irene, why are you here?” My eyes returned to Damien.
“Well,” I cleared my throat. “I was told the couple here wanted to see me.”
“But we never asked to see anyone Damien looked genuinely confused.
“Well, I did ask for the caterer. Don’t tell me,” Eva’s snake-like eyes traveled over my body and a smug smile settled on her face. “You’re the caterer we hired?”
1 nodded. “Yes, 1-”
The sound of Eva’s mocking laughter cut me off.
“So you’re here to cater for your ex-husband’s wedding ceremony?” Eva tsked, “You’re lucky. You’ll get to watch Damien and Itake our wedding vows right before your eyes.”
“Enough, Eva.” Damien’s jaw twitched. “Don’t talk to Irene like that.â
I frowned at his words, since when did Damien care about how she talked to me?
From what I remembered, he turned mute whenever Eva was around.
Since when did you care about how I talked to Irene?” Eva turned to him, “Can’t you see even after all these years, catering was the only thing she was able to achieve?”
“At least I was able to do something with my life. The only thing I see you did with yours is take up someone else’s leftovers I retorted.
The smirk on Eva’s face was replaced with a scowl and her nostrils flared “Trene!”
“Don’t you dare raise your voice at me, Little sister,” I warned
If Eva thought I was the same old Irene who stood quietly and let everyone trample over her, then I would clear all her
doubts
“Irene!” The door slammed open at that moment and Delores burst in, eyes filled with tears.
“Delores?” I caught my panting assistant, “What happened?”
“It’s Ch-Charlie” She stuttered, “He’s drowning!”
My heart dropped to my stomach.
Before I could say a word, Damien dashed past us and disappeared down the hallway.
I ran out too, Delores following closely behind, and headed for the elevator, pressing the elevator buttons several times only to realize it was occupied.
Chapter 4
I couldn’t wait for a second-apore and took the flight of stairs instead, eyes stinging with tears as I dashed out of the hotel and sprinted for the pool where a small crowd had gathered.
“Move!” I pushed one of the spectators out of the way.
My child was drowning and all they were just watching?!
“Charlie!” I cried, bursting out of the crowd only for my eyes to land on Damien.
The tall man was coming out of the pool, drenched from head to toe and carrying an unconscious Charlie in his arms.
1 sprinted to where Damien knelt, giving Charlie CPR and my stomach twisted in knots.
“No, please.” My heart twisted and tears rolled my cheeks. “Nothing can happen to Charlie, not my baby!”
Nothing could happen to my son.
Charlie was my world. He was the only reason I was still living. I would never be able to forgive myself if anything were to happen to him.
“He’ll be fine. I locked eyes with Damien and I could’ve sworn I saw worry swirling in those green orbs. “I’ll never let anything happen to him, I promise.”
His gaze returned to Charlie and I watched him press the little boy’s chest repeatedly.
“Come on,” Damien forced, pressing some more and blowing air into his mouth till finally, the brown haired boy coughed and water spilled out of his mouth.
1 let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding and crumbled to the ground.
“M-Mr Hero!” Charlie cried, crashing into Damien’s arms.
“Shhhh, it’s okay.” Damien hugged him back, his strong arms wrapping around him. “You’re okay now.”
Our eyes locked and a small smile made its way up his lips. “I promised your mom I’ll never let anything happen to you.”
I blinked several times trying to process what just happened,
Did Damien Chad just smile at me?
No, I had to be seeing things now.
I took several steps forward, ready to snatch my son from Damien’s grip but froze. It took me a few seconds to register that someone had grabbed my arm
“Was this your plan?” I turned and my eyes landed on Eva. “Was this why you returned to our lives?”
my
My brows furrowed. “Let me go. Eva, I need to get to my son-
“What son?” Eva snarled. “The illegitimate one you’re trying to force into Damien’s life?”
Eya!”
“Don’t be shameless, Irene!” She snapped. “I can’t believe you would go as far as bringing your illegitimate child just to return to Damien’s life”
“Leave my son out of your disgusting mouth,” I warned.
“Damien doesn’t belong to you! He’s mine so you better shove any ideas you have of trying to come back into his life down

your wretched throat”
“Enough, Eva!” Damien grabbed her by the arm. “You’re making scene.”
“You should listen to your groom.” I taunted. “You don’t want to ruin your grande wedding by creating a scene just a few days. before it, now do you?”
“Irene-
“Be rest assured, Eva, I want nothing to do with you or your excise of a groom. You can have my leftovers all to yourself.”
Eva’s lips drew back in a snarl. “I’m going to-”
|
“Enough, Eva!” Damien cut her off. “I’m not her son’s father so just stop this drama already.”
“Oh, I’ll stop the drama alright.” The blonde woman freed herself from his grip and her blazing eyes returned to me.
“Im ending this drama right now, you’re fired! Pack your things and get out of here: We won’t be needing any more of your
services.
I scoffed
“I’m sorry to inform you but you’ve signed a contract already. You need a three-week notice to cancel it so it doesn’t look like I’ll be leaving anytime soon.”
I leaned in and whispered. “You’ll have to try harder than that to get rid of me, Eva,”
Eva’s face contorted in rage. I didn’t wait to hear her dimwitted reply before picking up my son and storming off.
“Irene, wait!” Damien’s velvety voice called from behind. I refused to stop and increased my pace but the brown-haired man, blocked my path.
“Damien, move out of my way.” I seethed.
“Hear me out-
“What do you want?!” I snapped, fighting back the tears that threatened to fall.
A frown settled on his face and his green orbs searched mine. “I don’t understand you. If you want nothing to do with me, then why are you still here? Why are you catering for my wedding?”
“Is there something you’re not telling me?” His tone softened and my heart twisted at Damien’s words.
How was I supposed to explain I was only doing this putting up with him, Eva, and their circus of marriage, only to save our son’s life?
