Chapter 57
Damien’s POV:
Of all the news I could have thought could be shocking and arrived unexpectedly. Eva getting into an accident wasn’t one of them. And Irene being the news bearer made it more believable, especially when she looked like someone who had just seen. a ghost.
The news didn’t sit well with me as well. No matter how evil–minded Eva was, she was someone I once cared for. I don’t wish her something as crazy and bad as death. Although, I did wish she experienced something that could teach her a lesson, like a taste of her own bitter medicine
Aside from my worries for Eva, Irene mattered most to me, and seeing her looking all devastated and confused got me worried. I have been constantly texting Lenora for updates about what was happening at the hospital since she left the house with Irene but Lenora hasn’t given me a solid reply to calm me. All she could say was ‘I don’t know what’s going on, nobody has gotten back to me either. Not getting any updates wasn’t helping even in the tiniest bit, so all I had to do was wait.
Thankfully, Charlie was consumed by his animation program, giving me that space to wonder and think. I wasn’t even sure how much time had passed with me pacing around the living room, keeping an eye on Charlie and watching my phone like
a hawk
I was just so worried about Irene, I just wanted to know that she is doing fine and she is managing her emotions well. If the truth was told, Eva doesn’t deserve any help from her step–sister. Because Evat was the same person who wanted something horrible to happen to her own sister. She really deserves nothing from Irene.
Eventually, my phone rang and it was Lenora who was calling.
“Hey.” I said the moment I picked the call, “What’s the update? How is Irene?”
“I messed up. Irene is angry. She just left.” Lenora replied and I was confused because that was far from the explanation 1 wanted to hear.
“I don’t get you. Didn’t you guys head to the hospital? Why would Irene get angry and leave?” I queried.
“Yeah, we did. It’s just that I said what I shouldn’t have said to her and it ruined her mood completely. So she asked to be alone for a while. Delores and I are already coming back home.” Lenora answered and with the honk sounds in the background, I knew she was telling the truth.
“Why the hell would you leave Irene alone? She is not supposed to be alone.” I said to her.
“I know, Damien. But she asked for it and she’s an adult” Lenora replied, and before I could even interject with more argumentative words, she continued talking. “We are almost home, when we get back, Delores will tell you what happened. The least we can do is trust Irene’s decision
I paused and sighed. Lenora was right. She’s right about the fact that I should trust Irene’s decision, but when someone is too emotional, they actually don’t get to make the best decision
“Please hurry then. I need to know what happened. I can’t bear the thought of Irene being all alone out there.” I said to her instead of expressing my disagreement.
“You love her that much, brother?” She asked, the question felt out of the blue. I chuckled however to mask my surprise. Since Lenora got back with her fiancé, she seems different. She no longer seems like the sister who left for Europe years ago.
She does weird things that also seem out of the blue, but instead of questioning them, I decided to watch and observe to know what is really going on before I come to my conclusion.
But all I know is my sister has changed. Changed into someone I don’t really know.

“Damien, are you there?” She asked and her voice dragged me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah, I’m still here. I’m just speechless because my love for Irene can’t be put into words.” I responded.
30%
“That’s so cute.” She gushed over the phone and I chuckled again. “We’ll be home soon. Don’t worry so much for the love of your life. She added and hung up before I could say anything else.
I was left with more thoughts, a mixture of worry and concern not just for Irene alone, but for Lenora. And George, who l suspected to have impure intentions, has not done anything to prove my hunch correct.
Actually, these past few days have been peaceful and mellow, until today, when Eva had to once again disrupt our peace. The peace we were just finally getting to have after so many hurtful days.
I only hope the universe can give Irene a break to breathe became she has been going through so much. At first, it was me, then there was Eva, there was also child protective service, there was also the media, and then it had to be Eva again and
again.
Things need to start working in Irene’s favor. All of these were too much for one human. However, amidst it all, I will be by her side and always helping her lift her burdens, and cheering her up because those are all I can do in certain situations like
this one.
“We’re home. Damien!” Delores’s voice boomed into the house and I rushed to the doorway before she could even walk in.
“Lenora is still parking the car.” She said as she saw me already standing before her.
“Tell me what happened. Everything” 1 demanded and with the seriousness in my eyes, Delores immediately delved into selling me exactly how everything went at the hospital.
But from all she
it was only the part that Irene was mentioned that concerned me. I felt no ounce of pity towards Eva She doesn’t deserve it. And the fact that her condition was troubling Irene so much was getting me very angry.
“So why then did Irene request for alone time?” I asked after Delores finished narrating the hospital visit.
“Well, that’s all Lenora. She used the R word and made Irene way more emotional than she was. So I knew she would want to be alone so she could think. And she’s still unsure of what she wants to do about Eva’s situation.” Delores replied and 1 only nodded my head in understanding
That’s what I was saying about Lenora being a new person. She was someone who used to be more careful with her words. So why would she say something as provocative as that?
“Where do you think Irene can be?” I asked the most important question.
“I’m sure she would have gone somewhere quiet like a cafe near the hospital. Do you want to go look for her?” She asked and I nodded.
“I want to be there for her. Even if it’s a silent support. I just want her to feel my presence.” I replied to her, Irene is all that
matters to me.
“What about Charlie?” She asked, peeping into the living room. He has been watching his show. But he might be hungry already. Irene made a chicken pie this morning for everyone, he can have some of that. I’ll go look for my wife.” I told her.
“Alright. Be careful.” She said and patted my shoulders. I hurriedly grabbed the car key and as I stepped outside of the house, I saw Lenora climbing the little porch steps.
“Damien, I’m sorry for what I said to Irene. I was just sympathizing, I didn’t realize I would overstep.” She quickly said, but I waved at her dismissively.
“We’ll talk about it later. Where did George go?” I asked.

“He had an appointment somewhere.” She answered vaguely and I didn’t question her further either. “Where are you going?”
“To look for my wife. She needs me and I need to know she’s fine.” I replied and began heading out.
“Okay, brother. Be careful.” She waved at me and I waved back. I got into my car and soon I was already on the highway, heading in the direction of the hospital.
When I got to the hospital, I parked on the side and quickly googled the nearest cafe. I saw three cafes and I input the address into the GPS. When I got to the first cafe, I parked and went inside but I didn’t find her there.
1 got back on the road and soon I was at the next cafe but it was the same thing. She wasn’t there.
“Where are you, my love?” I muttered to myself as I drove to the next location. But before reaching my destination, I saw Irene walking on the roadside walkway in a frantic manner. I instantly pressed my car born and she didn’t even pay
attention
Knowing I would cause a bit of a traffic jam, I parked on the road and rushed out of my car, shouting her name at the top of my lungs
“Irene!”
And she finally saw me and heard me.
Tears gushed out of her eyes as she ran to me. I opened my arms for her and when she got to me, I enveloped her in my
embrace
With the numerous car–honking sounds in the background and people screaming at me, I was only focused on the woman crying her eyes out in my arms.
“She’s up, Damien. Eva woke up and I don’t know what I should do next.”
