“Delores, there’s one thing I’d like to know.” I said to my assistant the moment I got back to the grand hall where the ever was going to take place. I had stormed away from Damien, hoping it could be that easy to storm away from my past..
But it wasn’t. I was still here and stuck with this job I very much need.
“What’s that. Irene?” She asked, worry etched on her face with a sleeping Charlie in her arms.
“How did you lose Charlie that he ended up falling into the pool I questioned her. I have no intention to blame her, but I would like for her to be more careful with him.
“I made a mistake by rushing to the decorators to add some extra details that I had forgotten to mention before. I told him to wait for me, but I think he went exploring instead Delores explained, her Spanish accent is ever present, making her voice sound unique.
“I’m so sorry, Irene. I promise to be more careful next time. Delores assured me, and I trust her. She was probably the only human in this entire universe I could rely on. But with Eva around, I need to be extra careful of everything I do, especially when it involves 1
son.
“It’s okay, Delores. I also need to be more vigilant,” I said to her, I can’t wait for this job to be over, so I could leave this goddamned Miami.
“What’s up
with the CPS issue?” Delores asked, cradling Charlie more in her arms
Somebody I don’t even want to talk about took care of it.” I answered, a sour expression settling on my face.
“But isn’t that a good thing?” Delores asked, curiosity etched on her features.
“Delores, I can’t even say. But all I know is that I won’t let anyone do me favors I don’t want” I replied, thinking about the fact that CPS could get more provoked with Damien’s attempt of claiming that I’m his wife.
Does he not have a thinking head to realize this matter doesn’t concern him?
He has a wedding to focus all his attention on, I mean isn’t that what he had ever wanted? The reason for ending our marriage?
“I know everything will be fine.” Delores soothed.
“Irene!” Not again. I groaned hearing that voice I detest more than anything in the world.
“What can I do for you this pleasant afternoon, Mr Chad?” I turned around, putting on a polite smile as I will make any of our interactions from now on a professional one.
“Please, can we talk? I need to talk to you.” He said with a soft look in his eyes. But I would be a fool to believe any word that comes out of his mouth, as he was so quick to judge me to be a bad mom on our first encounter after five years.
What a jerk!
“Sure, I’m all ears. Everything is going as planned so far.” I told him, and I know he can tell that I’m purposely putting up a
barrier.
“Let’s go somewhere private. Please, Irene.” He insisted. What does he want from me? I thought he had everything he had ever wanted in life, so why was he all of a sudden adamant about butting into my personal business?
“No, Mr Chad. You can say everything you want to say right here I deadpanned, I’m sure with the look on my face, he’d be
able to tell how serious I am.

“Sorry, can you excuse me directed his words at Delores, who had nodded and scrambled away with Charlie firmly in her hands before I could stop her.
Ugli, Delores. I groaned in my head.
“So what do you want again from me? I thought I’ve made myself clear.” I tried not to raise my voice at him, but the glaring look in my eyes must be speaking volume.
“Irene, all I ask of you is take advantage of being here and let Charlie start his treatment again at the hospital. Think about the boy, not our differences. Please.” He said in a very gentle vode that almost got me fooled.
“I always think about my son. Are you insinuating something?” queried him in a very hard tone.
“No, Irene. I don’t mean that.”
“Oh, but you did. You had judged me to be one of those women who wants to entrap a rich man by using their child.” I reminded him.
“Im sorry about that. I just thought… but I know you are not that kind of person.” He quickly said.
“Do you even know me, Damien? You don’t. And you don’t know what and what I’m capable of doing. You don’t know me. So how about you leave my son and I alone. We can take care of ourselves. We’ve been doing just fine for the past years.”1 boldly said, making sure my words were crystal clear.
“He’s not even your son, so why care so much!”
Irene. The sturdy man before me took a few steps closer to me, “Irene,” He called again.
But before he could say any more thing. I heard screams and shouts from the direction Delores had gone.
“Fire!”
“Fire!!”
“Fire?” I muttered, and before I could realize what I was doing. I was already running like a crazed person to that direction the noise was coming from.
Getting to the spot where I saw a small crowd of people, I stopped in my tracks.
“What’s going on here?” I asked, worried as my eyes kept scanning around but I couldn’t see Delores or Charlie anywhere.
“There’s a fire in this room.” Someone answered, pointing at the closed door.
“Are there people in there?” I heard Damien ask from beside me.
“Yes, a woman and a child.” The person nodded, and before I could link anything together, a man had brought out Delores from the burning room.
“Delores, are you okay, where’s Charlie?” I rushed towards a frightened Delores, pushing through the small crowd and tried. to ask calmly.
Irene,” She broke into a sob, “I’m so sorry.” She began crying loudly.
“No, not my son.” I shook my head very fast.
Fate can’t be this cruel. The universe can’t hate me so much that it would want to take away my son, the only reason I’m still breathing and living.
No, that can’t be.

Chapter 6
“It must hurt, right? I heard Eva snicker from behind. I didn’t care when she got here, and I honestly don’t give a damn about her comments, because I’m not going to give up on my son
“Your poor bastard son might get roasted alive in that fire.” She whispered, but I used my elbow and jabbed her stomach harshly causing to fall on the floor.
“Damn you.” I cussed at her and attempted to plunge into the room, but people held me back.
“A man has gone in there to save your son. We just hope they both make it out alive because the fire has gotten worse.” One of the people said to me, while still restraining me from running into the fire.
So all I could do was wait and fervently pray.
Because if anything happens to Charlie, it will be the absolute end of me.
