rom the bank popped up on Seraphina’s phone: $200,000 had been transferred to her account.
Clarence had kept his word. But now that he no longer saw her as his lover, what was she supposed to make of this money! She couldn’t accept it in the same way as before. The only way she could justify it was by treating it as a loan:
Seraphina noticed a table nearby with a sticky note and a pen. Quickly, she scribbled down an IOU, snapped a picture, and sent it to Randy with a message that read: Please thank Mr. Vanderbilt for me. I’ll repay him as soon as I start working.
Meanwhile, Randy was sitting with Clarence at breakfast. The table was laden with all kinds of food, yet Clarence barely touched any of it, his face sulky and brooding.
Randy could feel the tension hanging in the air, making it impossible to enjoy the meal. Here he was, taking the spot meant for Seraphina, but now he was just a convenient punching bag. He couldn’t relax, knowing he might get caught in the crossfire of Clarence’s simmering anger at any moment.
Just then. Randy’s phone buzzed with a message. He opened it and saw a picture of the IOU from Seraphina.
Randy raised an eyebrow. Didn’t they spend the night together? Why would Seraphina write an IOU? Wasn’t she supposed to be Clarence’s lover? What’s going on here?’ he wondered.
Though confused, Randy knew he had to pass the message on. He sent the photo to Clarence on WhatsApp, and cautiously spoke up once he saw Clarence open the app. “Mr. Vanderbilt, Ms. Johnson wanted me to thank you on her behalf. She said she would repay the money after she-
Before Randy could finish his sentence, Clarerice’s arm shot out, sweeping all the dishes off the table and sending them crashing to the floor.
Seraphina had quietly paid the $200,000 hospital bills for her father. Shirley had no idea who their mysterious benefactor was; she never suspected it was her daughter who had managed it.
Though shocked by the sudden windfall, with no way to trace the mysterious benefactor, Shirley just let it go. Once George’s surgery was a success, the whole situation simply became an unsolved puzzle.
Although George’s surgery had only been moderately successful, it had pulled him back from the brink of death. For Seraphina, that was more than enough reason to feel happy these past few days.
On Friday afternoon, as soon as the school bell rang, Seraphina and her friend Barbara packed their bags and headed to Heavenly Cakes for their part-time shifts. The cake shop was only a ten-minute walk from the school.
Seraphina had just finished changing into her work uniform when the shop manager, Audrey, called her over, gesturing to a laptop on the table by the window.
“Seraphina, can you come here for a second?” Audrey asked.
Seraphina walked over. “What’s up?”
“I remember you type pretty fast, right?”
Seraphina smiled lightly, “I guess so.”
“Great, could you help me type up this report? I’m hopelessly slow,” Audrey groaned, gesturing to a stack of papers. “It’s the monthly report, and it’s a bit long this time.”
She waved the manuscript-three pages of densely written A4 sheets. “It’ll probably take me two hours to do it myself”

“No problem, I’ll take care it.” Seraphina agreed. Audrey grinned, pulling up a chair for her.
Outside the window, the intersection was bustling with traffic, and among the sea of cars, a sleek Maybach stood out.
Inside the backseat of the Maybach, Clarence had just finished a video conference, his sharp features clouded with a deep frown, with a hint of irritation pulling at his brows. He closed his eyes briefly, rubbing his temples, and when he opened them again, something in the street outside caught his attention.
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the cake shop, he could see Seraphina completely absorbed in her task. She was typing quickly, her slender fingers flying across the keyboard, her slim waist and graceful posture accentuated by the fitted black-and-white uniform.
As she neared the end of the report, Seraphina paused and took a sip of the cappuccino that Audrey had treated her to, her rosy lips pressing lightly against the cup. Then, she gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her car, revealing the graceful curve of her fair, serene profile.
As she continued typing, Clarence watched her for a few seconds longer, her quiet concentration radiating such serenity that, just by watching her, all of Clarence’s troubles seemed to vanish.
The traffic light was about to turn green. Clarence pulled his gaze away and, in a deep voice, said to Randy, who was sitting beside him reviewing the data, “Get out.”
Randy looked up, stunned, unsure what had just happened. Two minutes later, Randy showed up in front of Seraphina. Seraphina blinked in surprise, standing up from her seat. “Mr. Burton? Are you here for a cake, or maybe some coffee?”
loss Randy flashed a charming smile. “Ms. Johnson, I was hoping you could help me type up a document.” Seraphina was at a for how to respond.
Seraphina never imagined she’d be back at Clarence’s villa just half a month later.
She hadn’t wanted to leave with Randy, but staying at the cake shop and causing a scene wasn’t an option either. So, when Barbara wasn’t paying attention, she slipped out and got into a car with Randy.
As they approached the villa, its grand, castle-like structure surrounded by lush greenery, Seraphina’s thoughts began to wander. “Why does Clarence want to see me now? To ask for the money back?’ she wondered, unable to think of any other reason for his invitation. But even if she were sold off, it wouldn’t cover the amount she owed.
“Ms. Johnson, this way, please.” Randy got out of the car and held the elaborate iron gate open for her with a polite gesture.
Seraphina hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. She kept her head down as they walked along the flower-lined path, completely unaware of the eyes fixed on her from the third-floor balcony.
Clarence sat back in his chair, his gaze following Seraphina as she made her way in. She was dressed in a soft yellow dress that fluttered lightly with each step, making her look almost like a cautious little fairy stepping into a foreign world.
Clarence’s eyes flickered briefly as he lowered his gaze and took a sip of red wine. Randy led Serap na upstairs to the study and handed her a slim file.
“Give me half an hour, Seraphina said after a quick glance through the pages.
Randy smiled, “No rush. Would you like something to drink?”
Just some water, thanks,” replied Seraphina.
“Sure.” With that, Randy left, and Seraphina got to work.

Chapter 10
The study fell into a comfortable quiet, broken only by the soft sound of Seraphina’s fingers tapping away on the keyboard. She soon lost herself in the work, her focus so intense that she almost forgot where she was-until the door creaked open.
She lifted her head slightly, expecting Randy to have returned with the water. But when her eyes flickered up, she found it was Clarence who stepped in, his tall, commanding figure filling the doorway.
Seraphina’s fingers froze on the keyboard, her heart skipping a beat. Her eyes locked on Clarence, and for a moment, she could only stare. He walked towards her, holding a glass of water his stride unhurried and elegant. His other hand rested casually in his pocket, the gesture effortlessly exuding power and charisma.
Seraphina had braced herself for the possibility of running into Clarence here, but his sudden appearance still made her nervous. Maybe there was just something inherently intimidating about this man.
