Chapter 11
Clarence strolled over to the desk, his movements unhurried. Seraphina couldn’t handle his intense gaze and instinctively. lowered her eyes. She bit her lip nervously, unsure of what to say.
Though they hadn’t had sex, they had spent the night together in the same bed and even shared a kiss, a kind of intimacy that she couldn’t easily forget. Clarence set the glass of water down beside her laptop with a soft clink, causing a slight ripple in the liquid.
“Take a break,” he said, his voice soft yet commanding.
Her lips tightened. “Thank you,” she murmured.
Without a word, Clarence reached out and lifted her chin with a gentle touch. Seraphina raised her head, her eyes betraying a hint of panic as she stared at his calm, detached face. His features were intoxicatingly handsome, but the coldness in his eyes was suffocating. His gaze, devoid of warmth, reminded her of a frigid winter lake at dawn.
“Only half a month apart, and you’ve grown so distant?” he asked.
She didn’t know how to respond. Am I supposed to act closer to him?”
“Not much of a lover, are you?” he remarked, his tone biting.
She silently scoffed to herself, ‘Lover? We never even slept together.
Before she could gather her thoughts, he leaned in close, his breath warm against her face. Her heart raced and her mind
Wank for a second.
His eyes, which had been so cold moments ago, now glimmered with

voice almost teasing.
“Didn’t what?” he cut her off. “What, now that you’ve got the money, you want to back out?”
Seraphina tried to protest, “No, it’s just…You said…”
“What did I say?” he asked.
Seraphina’s lips parted slightly, her eyes searching Clarence’s face in bewilderment. ‘Right, she thought to herself. ‘He never actually said anything. I just assumed we were done! She suddenly realized just how much control he had over the situation. This cunning man knew exactly how to play her.
Her lips, soft and rosy, pouted slightly in frustration, glistening in the light like ripe cherries after rain-an innocently enticing sight.
Clarence’s eyes darkened with desire as he swallowed hard, and before he knew it, he leaned darto press his lips against Seraphina’s. They were sweet and soft, just as he remembered, stirring that same mixture of comfort and addiction that he had felt during their first kiss half a month ago.
It had been her first kiss, and in truth, it was his too. They were both novices in this game, though Clarence, with his confident demeanor, hid his inexperience all too well
After dinner, Clarence and Randy had a virtual meeting to attend, while Seraphina needed to study for her upcoming SAT, so Clarence offered her the use of the second-floor study while he and Randy got down to business in his master bedroom
office.

Before meeting Clarence, Seraphina had always assumed that CEOs lived the kind of relaxed lives often depicted in TV shows and novels-filled with leisurely activities like sipping collee, playing golf, or yachting
But her encounters with Clarence revealed the hidden, demanding side of those at the top of the pyramid. While Clarence appeared to have it all, with everything at his command, his days were tightly scheduled down to the minute.
Having just taken over the family business, Clarence faced numerous challenges. His schedule was packed, with nearly every waking moment devoted to work.
During dinner, she had overheard him on a few calls. His speech was impeccable, his decisions quick and confident. His mind worked at a level that left her in awe. It was no wonder he had risen above the rest to become the heir to the Vanderbilt family.
She wondered what kind of extraordinary woman could stand as a good match for such an exceptional man. The thought stirred an odd, subtle flutter of emotion within her.

those distracting thoughts, Seraphina focused back on her textbooks. Time slipped by as she worked through her problems, the quiet study lulling her into concentration until a knock on the door brought her back to reality. “Come in,” she said.
The door opened, and Sharon entered carrying a tray with three plates of brownies. She hesitated for a moment when she saw Seraphina sitting alone. “Ms. Johnson, where are Mr. Vanderbilt and Mr. Burton?” she asked.
They’re upstairs, Seraphina replied..
Sharon smiled and brought the tray over, setting it down on the desk. She placed one of the brownies in front of Seraphina. “This is for you,” Sharon said with a warm smile.
“Thank you, Seraphina said.
“Enjoy. I’ll take these up to Mr. Vanderbilt and Mr. Burton, Sharon said as she picked up the tray.
Seraphina glanced at the clock; it was already 10:30 p.m. “They’re still in the meeting?’ she wondered. A sudden thought crossed her mind, and on impulse, she blurted out, “Sharon, I… I can take it to Mr. Vanderbilt.”
Sharon hesitated only for a moment before handing the tray to Seraphina. “That would be lovely. Thank you.”
As Seraphina carried the tray upstairs, Sharon watched her retreating figure, a small, contented smile slowly spreading across her face.
Sharon still remembered the morning when Clarence had asked her to prepare a variety of breakfast dishes. She had assumed it was because Clarence was trying to cater to Seraphina’s tastes. She had been delighted that finally, a girl had captured Clarence’s heart
But then things had taken a sudden turn. Seraphina left, and Clarence suddenly erupted in anger, sweeping the entire breakfast spread onto the floor in a fit of rage. Sharon didn’t know exactly what had happened between them, but she was certain of one thing-anyone who could stir Clarence’s emotions must mean something special to him.
Having practically raised Clarence, Sharon felt more like a caring elder than just a housekeeper. The moment Sharon first laid eyes on Seraphina, she had liked her
In her heart, only someone as gentle and lovely as Seraphina could be worthy of Clarence, and if he let her slip through his fingers, it would be a loss he’d regret for the rest of his life. Now that Seraphina had returned, Sharon was more than willing to give her the chance to win Clarence over.
When Seraphina reached the third floor, she knocked gently on the door. Randy opened it, smiling when he saw her
holding the tray, Thanks, Ms. Johnson.”
“You still in the meeting?” Seraphina asked in a hushed tone.

Randy nodded. He started to reach for the tray, then paused, saying gently, “Why don’t you take it in to Mr. Vanderbilt yourself?
At first, Randy had intended to take the tray from her. But then, he thought better of it. ‘Seraphina chose to bring the snacks herself; that means she wants to see Clarence. Why not give them a little push?’ he decided.
When Clarence told him to bring Seraphina back to the villa, Randy realized she held a special place in Clarence’s life. After all, Clarence never went out of his way to win anyone back, especially not a girl. He was a fortress of ice, impenetrable and
immovable.
The fact that Seraphina could make Clare
