Chapter 27
“Goodbye, Mr. Vanderbilt,” she replied, not lingering for a second as she opened the door and stepped out. As soon as her feet hit the ground, Clarence hit the gas and sped off, leaving her in the dust.
He couldn’t believe that he’d given the same person two chances to say goodbye to him. What a frustrating girl she was.
In the rearview mirror, he caught sight of Seraphina boarding the bus alone. It was a lonely sight that tugged at his heart. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
‘She even denied me? No way. The one who calls it quits can only be me, Clarence muttered in his mind.

By the time Seraphina got home, it was already 10:30 p.m., and Shirley whipped up some meatball soup for her.
“So, how was your first day?” Shirley asked, concern written all over her face.
“Pretty great. I snagged the sales champ title,” Seraphina replied while slurping her soup.
“Really?” Shirley beamed, pulling Seraphina into a warm hug. “Sera, you’re amazing.”
“Of course! Just look at who my mom is. You’re a rockstar at your company, so it’s only natural that your daughter inherits those awesome genes. I can’t let you down, right?”
“Absolutely.” Shirley nodded while eyeing her beautiful daughter. A hint of melancholy flickered in her eyes as she tucked a strand of hair behind Seraphina’s ear. “But working so late every day really worries me.”
“Gotta hustle for money, right? You know the deal. No pain, no gain.” Seraphina shrugged lightly. “Besides, I don’t have much else going on. A routine of work and home suits me just fine.”
Shirley stayed quiet, yet her smile was tinged with something deeper, and her gaze was clouded with unspoken thoughts. She couldn’t help but feel sorry for her daughter, who had such stunning looks but was trapped in an ordinary routine. If only…
“Hey, don’t forget about Tommy’s game. Mom, flip to the sports channel.” Seraphina’s sudden enthusiasm snapped Shirley out of her reverie.
“Oh right, I totally forgot. Tommy texted me to watch it.” Shirley quickly grabbed the remote and switched to the sports channel.
The lush green field looked inviting, and the players made their entrance. The stadium that could hold tens of thousands was almost full. It was home turf to the Isle Champions, the team Thomas was in, with a sea of Angoria fans filling the stands, waving banners and cheering. Screams like “Go Tommy! You’re the best!” erupted from the crowd.
Thomas, the team’s forward, was a sight to behold. With his talent and looks, he had a dedicated fan club of girls.
The camera zoomed in on Thomas, capturing his expressionless face that made the other decent–looking players fade into the background. He had this edgy vibe, too cool for school, and yet it was exactly that rebellious charm that made the girls
Swoon.
“Tommy looks even hotter,” Seraphina said.
Shirley chuckled and replied, “What’s the point of being handsome if he never smiles? No girl’s gonna dare approach him. I worry he’ll end up a lifelong bachelor.”
“Mom, you’re worrying for nothing. He’s got tons of female fans plenty of options for a girlfriend.”
