Chapter 5
I turned off my phone after seeing the message sent successfully.
I fell asleep with a sleep mask on.
I was woken up by an air hostess when the flight landed at the Aelford Airport.
Vicente had been waiting at the exit early.
He snatched my luggage.
I had to follow behind him.
In the car, Vicente had prepared a blanket to cover my legs.
Seeing him busy and sweating profusely, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“Vicente, I am not a kid anymore.”
Vicente stopped me from moving the blanket away.
“Jaliyah, you are always seen as a kid in my eyes. I promised Mr. and Mrs. Wagner that I would safely take you home.”
Looking at the familiar night scene outside the window, I heaved a sigh of relief.
“Finally, I am back.”
Aelford was my hometown.
I used to dream of studying at a better school.
I worked so hard that I finally got admitted to the best medical school in the country.
Afterward, I overcame all the difficulties and graduated as a postgraduate student.
After I became a doctor, I overcame all obstacles and challenges during work, enabling me to achieve current results.
It was time to use my medical skills and experiences where it was needed.
Vicente and I listened to a pop singer’s songs all the way.
Neither of us said another word.
It lasted until Vicente received a call from the hospital.
“Dr. Barron, there is a patient who needs surgery immediately.”
Vicente did not hesitate. “Okay. I will be there in ten minutes.” Chapter 5
He pulled over and turned his head to look at me.
He said, “Jaliyah, I have to go to the hospital for emergency surgery. Do you mind taking a taxi home by yourself?”
Watching his sincere expression, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter again.
“I’ll go with you. I can get familiar with the hospital by the way.”
Vicente did not refuse.
Vicente and I performed this surgery together.
It was not completed until the early morning of the next day.
Vicente handed me a cup of coffee.
“Jaliyah, thank you. I’m sorry to make you work overtime upon your arrival.”
I shook my head.
Vicente was the only experienced cardiac surgeon in Aelford.
I could tell from his exhausted face how busy his daily work was.
Compared to his hardships, mine was nothing.
Just as Vicente was about to speak, I received Edwin’s call.
“Jaliyah, is it fun to make a scene? How can you say break up with me casually? I admit that I’ve been neglecting you lately. Tell me what you want, and I will buy it for you tomorrow.”
I didn’t want Edwin’s gift because that was the way every time he tried to coax me.
He never asked for my opinion.
Sometimes it was an ill–fitting dress.
Sometimes it was a necklace that I didn’t like.
Or something else…
Whether I liked them or not, the next morning those things would be placed in the living room.
This was the first time he asked me what I wanted.
I was supposed to be happy.
But now I couldn’t be happy, no matter what.
My attitude was extremely cold. “I want you not to disturb me.”

Without waiting for Edwin’s response, I hung up the phone and blocked him.
I took a taxi and went home.
Afraid of waking up my parents, I tiptoed up the stairs, but still bumped my foot.
Dad immediately got up to check when he heard the sound.
“Jaliyah, you are back. Are you hungry? Hold on, I’ll heap up the dishes for you.”
I hugged Dad and couldn’t help but cry when I saw the hearty meals on the table.
“Dad, I’m home. Mr. Wagner approved my application for five years. From now on, I can be by your side every day.”
Dad gently patted me on the shoulder and laughed, “Jaliyah, as doctors, our patients are the most important. Besides, your mom and I are swamped with work every day. We don’t need your
company.”
Dad had never seen me cry like this before. He appeared at a loss and quickly grabbed a tissue to
wipe away my tears.
“Jaliyah, don’t cry. I’ll cook your favorite Macaroni for you right now.”
I nodded while wiping my tears.
After the meal, I took a shower and went to bed.
I was awakened by the constant message tones early the next morning.
“Jaliyah, were you forced away by Tiara?”
“Today, the gossip about the quarrel between Edwin and Tiara spread out in the hospital.”
“I also heard it. The entire department heard the shout from Dr. Leach, who has always been
gentle.”
There was an uproar in the working chat group.
I tightly covered myself with the blanket and set the chat group message reminder to the “No disturbing” model.
Just as I was about to fall asleep again, Tiara called.
Tiara didn’t give me a chance to speak but immediately started mocking me.
“Jaliyah, did you think that by disappearing, Edwin would change his mind and love you?
“Edwin is mine, and you better never come back.”

I was not in the mood to argue with her, so I lazily said, “Alright, princess.”
Tiara’s venting did not work on me.
She became furious.
She shouted hysterically over the phone, “Jaliyah, Edwin is about to agree to marry me. Be aware
that you are the one who is not loved.”
I had gotten used to Tiara’s showing off.
As long as Edwin treated her even just a little bit better than me, she would seize the opportunity to
show it off to me.
Now I didn’t want to subordinate to Edwin any longer.
I cleared my throat and smiled, “Well, Tiara, as long as you’re happy. By the way, never shout at me like a barking dog in the future.”
Sleeping for a whole day was what I had longed for since I started studying medicine.
I didn’t want to be disturbed by anything.
After blocking Tiara on my phone, I turned it off and fell asleep.
I was awakened by the aroma of my parents‘ cooking late in the afternoon.
I got up and had a plentiful meal, thinking about going out for a walk.
As I opened the door, I saw Edwin standing at the doorway.
He was smiling at me.
But I didn’t greet him with a smile.
“Edwin, what are you doing here?”
Edwin didn’t get angry.
He asked me in a low voice, “Jaliyah, how about we go take wedding photos? Besides, I’d like to meet with your parents to discuss our wedding arrangement.”
My eyes were filled with astonishment at his words.
“Edwin, I hate a two–timer like you. Besides, we have broken up.”
When Edwin heard these words, a cold light shrouded his eyes.
“Jaliyah, just a heads–up. You don’t have the option of breaking up.”
