Chapter 14
Over the last few days, Tanner had been selling the gifts from me to gather money and bail John out, but he failed to collect the amount despite his best efforts.
One day, when we were done with after-class programs, he stopped me at the entrance. “Pearl, let’s have a talk!”
I looked at the guy who was once my crush. Now, he was no longer the bright and prideful man I fell in love with. His eyes had lost their spark, and he developed
dark circles.
Was he missing the glamor that came with the Rosenbloom heir?
Hearing my name from his mouth was appalling. I smirked. “Why, Tanner? Are you thinking of keeping five-sixth of the gifts you haven’t returned to me?”
Tanner had only managed to return one-sixth of the gifts I bought him.
“Can you stop it? You’re so materialistic! All you talk about is money!”
I snickered at his indignance, especially when he owed me stuff.
Tanner said to me, “I agree with your proposal to sponsor my education, but keep it a secret! By the way, Maisie has suffered a lot these days. You should offer her a few thousand dollars as compensation!”
What was wrong with this bastard? No decent man would ever think of saying that aloud!
I circled him twice. “Tanner, are you sick in the mind?”
“Do I look like a fool to you? Stop humiliating me!” Anger flashed across his face.
“And? Why do I need to lower myself before a shameless creature? Are you serious? How dare you even dream of paying off your family’s debt with my money? Dream on!”
I was about to storm away when Tanner stepped forward to stop me. I immediately slapped him across the face. “Let go of me!”
I did not fear him at all because our family driver was standing across the street.
Maisie witnessed the scene and hurried over to hold Tanner. She barked at me, “Tanner’s lowered himself before you and agreed to your sponsorship. What else do you want from him?
“He’s played along with you and your temper, but why are you never satisfied with him? Won’t you feel bad for him, knowing what struggles he’s been through these days?”
I could feel the anger rising in me despite knowing their wretched personalities. I had never come across someone who demanded stuff from me with such arrogance!
I wholeheartedly gave this couple my blessings. They should just stick with dating each other so they wouldn’t be a menace to others.
Tanner covered his cheek and cast a heartbroken look at me. “Pearl, you’ve changed! You would never do this to me in the past!”
I snapped, “Do you need a refresher on the way you treated me?”
His face paled. “I-I was wrong, Pearl. Can you give me a second chance?”
