Chapter 18
One day, the police showed up at our classroom during Ms. Cressen’s lesson.
“Ms. Cressen, we need to ask your student, Tanner Rosenbloom, a few questions regarding a specific situation. Please take him out of the classroom.”
No matter how close we were to the door, we could nevet overhear a conversation that was going on outside the classroom.
“Finley, what’s going on? Did Tanner do something?”
“I don’t know, but my uncle has been busy dealing with the case regarding online loans. Could it be that Tanner is involved in one of them?” Finley speculated.
“Are you dumb? He’s a minor. How can he apply for an online loan? Besides, if he does apply for a loan, the debtor should be here to collect the loan in person, not the police!”
We made a ton of speculations, but at the end of the day, none of us got closer to the truth than we originally were.
Two days had passed since then. Tanner never returned to school.
Ms. Cressen had someone move his desk to a corner. She even gave us a lesson on Internet safety protocols. That way, we’d learn how to protect ourselves better on the Internet and avoid signing contracts on behalf of others who wish to apply for online loans.
We finally found out what actually happened to Tanner. It appeared that he and Maisie worked together in luring a senior-year student from another school into applying for online loans for them. That girl couldn’t handle the pressure of the debtors’ frequent visits and threats. Therefore, she made the decision to jump off a building.
Apparently, Maisie had gotten to know a bunch of female delinquents after she transferred to another school. Those delinquents had been bullying a girl for a very long time, causing the poor girl to be extremely self-conscious.
Since Tanner was in dire need of money, Maisie came up with an idea for him. He was to shower the victim with love and care. Maisie even arranged for a scenario when Tanner would end up saving the victim from the bullies.
His actions ended up touching the victim greatly. That was when she decided to apply for an online loan on his behalf.
But Tanner was a sick bastard. Not only did he order the victim to apply for naked loans, but he also had her borrow from multiple loan platforms in one go. The poor victim couldn’t afford to pay the astronomical interest at all.

Once it was time for the debtors to collect the debt, they used the nudes to threaten the victim into paying them. When the poor girl went to seek Tanner out for help, she found out that he was actually dating Maisie, who was one of her bullies.
That was when the girl’s hope for survival finally flickered out.
She was already diagnosed with depression, to begin with. With everything weighing down on her shoulders, she chose to end her life by jumping off a building.
Currently, both Tanner and Maisie were imprisoned in the police station. It was said that the girl’s parents refused to settle the case privately. They were adamant about making Tanner and Maisie pay the price.
A few days later, Tanner’s mother came over to pick up his belongings. She limped the whole time and looked a lot older than I remembered during my last visit to her in my past life.
I still remembered what Tanner had said to me back then. “My mom needs the best orthopedic doctor money can ever afford. As usual, I want you to disappear right after giving me the money. I don’t want her to know that I’ve been paying for everything with an outsider’s money.”
After that, Tanner’s mother was admitted into the best VIP room in the hospital. When I went to visit her, she happened to be smiling from ear to ear while taking
Maisie’s hand.
“You’re an amazing woman. Only someone like you deserves to be with my son.”
Heh! Tanner’s mother sure had a good eye! Those two would be going to jail together like the perfect couple they were in this lifetime!
One day, Finley shared some gossip with us. “Tanner has gone absolutely nuts in jail!”
Our interest was immediately piqued, so we scooted over to hear what he had to say.
“He claimed that he’s the CEO of a company! Ahahaha! And he claimed that he’d make everyone pay with blood if he wasn’t released from prison right away! Do you think he’s been reading too many CEO web novels recently?”
My heart skipped a beat. Tanner must have gotten reborn as well.
But it was fine. He was still a useless loser after getting reborn anyway.
Both Tanner and Maisie had officially turned 16 years old, so they could be held legally responsible for everything they had done. But once the verdict was passed down, Maisie was sentenced to ten years in jail, whereas Tanner was only required to serve three months.
Could it be that Tanner was still blessed with good luck after he got reborn? I’d have to find an opportunity to probe around after he got out of jail.
Before I could track Tanner down, he was quick to corner me at the school gate while looking very furious.
“Pearl Rosenbloom, why did you stop sponsoring me? You even caused my father to get sentenced to jail time on purpose! Even now, Maisie’s still suffering behind bars! You’ve completely changed! Why did you do this to us?”
Tanner looked batshit crazy at the moment. It had been three months since I last saw him, and yet he was reduced to a complete wreck. He no longer looked well- kept and handsome like he was in our past lives.
“Didn’t you tell me that you don’t need my money at all? You were appalled whenever I sent you money, weren’t you? You even told me that Maisie’s the light of your life! Without her support, you wouldn’t have inade it through these years!
“All I did was satisfy your request. What’s wrong with that?” I retorted.

“Wait… You got reborn as well?” Tanner stared at me, clearly aghast.
Soon, his demeanor completely changed. “Hmph! So what if you got reborn too? Your family is nothing to me! Don’t think you can look down on me just because I have nothing under my name right now!
“Did you seriously think you’re the reason I got rich in our past lives? I’ll show you that I can still strike it rich on my own without your help!”
