Chapter 2
Shannon stood up, blowing a stray strand of hair off her cheek. Go ahead and plan Miriam’s wedding. Why waste your breath on me? I’m heading to bed”
With that, she turned on her heel, ready to leave.
“Stop!” Lincoln’s voice boomed, sharp and commanding. “What’s that attitude? Let me make this crystal clear–now that you’re back in Lorsion, everything you do reflects on the Lane family. If you dare embarrass us, I’ll make you regret it.”
Shannon arched a brows, her tone dripping with disdain. “Embarass you? Please. The only thing embarrassing here is having you as my father.”
Her mind flashed back to those years in the village. No parents, support, just a cruel maid who beat her, pinched her, and starved her for days on end
And her wealthy family? Nowhere to be found. They didn’t even bother giving her their contact info, let alone visiting. If it hadn’t been for her master, she might not have survived.
You brat, how dare you speak to me like that? Lincoln explode, raising his hand to strike her.
But Shannon was faster. She caught his wrist, her grip firm Tm not the same scared little kid you dumped eighteen years ago. You don’t get to order me around anymore. So listen carefully, Lincoln–stay in your lane, or I’ll make sure you regret
You- Lincoln sputtered, his face red with fury. He grabbed a vase, ready to throw it at her.
“Dad! No!” Miriam clung to his arm, her voice trembling with concem Calm down, Dad. Shannon didn’t mean it. She’s just… used to doing whatever she wants after living in the backwater village.
“She doesn’t really get how to act with respect for herself or for her family. But it’s fine. We can teach her. I’m sure she’ll figure out how to be a proper Lane daughter eventually”
“Heh, she’ll never measure up!” Lincoln barked, clutching his chest like the very sight of Shannon was giving him a heart attack. “She’s nothing compared to you, Miriam.”
Miriam turned to Shannon, her voice soft and pleading. “Shannon, you shouldn’t have been so rude to Dad. Why don’t you apologize to him”
Piss off! You fake, just cut the crap. You make me sick Shannon shared, jerking Lincoln’s wrist free. The motion sent his hand flying, smacking Miriam across the face.
Miriam cried out, clutching her cheek as tears welled in her eyes She looked at Shannon, all doe–eyed and hurt. “You really don’t like me, do you, Shannon?”
“Nope,” Shannon shot back with a sneer. “So stay out of my way. Got it?”
“Shannon!” Camilla gasped, pulling Miriam into her arms. “You’ve crossed the line this timet
She stroked Miriam’s back like she was soothing a fragile child. “Sweetheart, don’t waste your time on her. Let her dig her own grave. You just focus on getting ready to become Randall’s fiancee.”
Miriam nodded sweetly, leaning against Camilla like the perfect daughter. “Okay, Mom. I’ll stay away from her.”
The scene played out like a sickly sweet family drama, and Shannon felt her stomach churn.
She turned to leave, but the housekeeper, Daley Nelson, appeared in the doorway, beaming. “Mr. Lane, Mrs. Lane! Mr. Rowe is here with a lot of gifts. Looks like he’s here to talk about the engagement”

“Really? Invite him in sail Lincoln. His anger evaporated instantly, replaced by pure excitement as he rushed toward the
door
The Lae family, while wealthy, was nowhere near the status of the Rowe family. Randall, the head of the Rowes, proposed to Miriam? That was a dream come true.
The rest of the family followed Lincoln eagerly, leaving Shannon and Miriam alone. Shannon flopped back onto the sofa, a smirk tugging at her lips. Time to sit back and watch the fireworks.
Miriam stayed home to keep up her sweet, demure act–and to ab it in Shannon’s face.
“Thanks to Mom and Dad, I get to marry Randall. He’s amazingsn’t he? I’m so lucky. Everyone here adores me, and his family’s so powerful. Not to mention how much he loves me… she said triumphantly.
Shannon simply let out a low chuckle. “Oh, interesting. What makes you so sure he’s here to propose to you? What if he’s here for me?”
