Chapter 27
Calvert’s lips parted slightly, his cold voice cutting through the car’s interior. “Where’s Ash?”
Jade’s smile vanished instantly. ‘After all my efforts to see him, lie immediately brings up that witch. Just a few days have passed, what has Ash done to him? Why is she all he talks about?
Little did Jade know, Calvert wasn’t really interested in seeing Asi; he just wanted to ask about the incident when she fell into the water.
The truck driver had just woken up at the police station and immediately committed suicide by poisoning himself.
The toxins found in his system resembled those from a notorious assassin group Calvert had encountered before.
“She’s not feeling well,” Jade replied reluctantly.
Suddenly, she recalled what that woman had said outside the Dream Couture store and continued, “Her adoptive parents mentioned that she used to do… Well, some unsavory things for money, so during her period, she feels worse than usual and can’t make it to your dates.”
Calvert’s sharp gaze shot toward Jade, his tone turning icy. “Her adoptive parents?”
“Yeah.” Jade nodded. “The Moreno family. They run a small company. Not rich, but they’re doing okay…”
Seeing the coldness in Calvert’s expression grow, Jade felt a surge of satisfaction, though she feigned concern. “I didn’t want to tell you, but we’ve known each other for so long, I couldn’t keep it from you.”
Calvert’s eyes hardened like ice. “Drive.”
He never expected that Ash, who acted so high and mighty in front of him had such a sordid past.
‘A woman from a humble background can really be so manipulative. If it weren’t for my decision to break off the engagement, I may have been fooled by her,’ thought Calvert.

Feeling the chill radiating from him, Jade secretly reveled in her triumph. ‘If Calvert believes he definitely wouldn’t want to marry Ash anymore.
She didn’t know where Calvert was taking her, but as long as they were together, she was happy.
Suppressing her excitement, she sat quietly beside him, sneaking glances at the handsome man. ‘Calvert is so extraordinary; only I deserve him.’
After a moment of silence, Jade finally spoke up. “Calvert, I honestly think Ash doesn’t deserve you at all. We’ve been friends for years; don’t you think I’m a better match?”
Calvert frowned, caught off guard by her words.
Seeing his displeasure, Jade quickly added, “I really do like you. With everyone preparing for your wedding, I’m afraid if I don’t act now, it’ll be too late.”
Tears streamed down her face, glistening on her cheeks, and paired with her white dress, she looked heartbreakingly beautiful.
If it were any other guy, he would have pulled her into an embrace by now. But Calvert remained unmoved, even shifting
away
from her.
“I have something to tell you too,” he said coldly, devoid of any sympathy.

Jade’s heart raced with hope, She knew he still cared for her. She wiped her tears and patiently waited for him to share the good news.
In the quiet café, Calvert chose a booth by the window.
The staff, perceptive as always, brought him his usual coffee and pastries.
Jade felt a surge of anticipation as she touched her bag.
If Calvert was willing to ditch Ash for her, she would bravely stand by him, even if it meant severing ties with her family.
“There’s something I need to clarify: even without Ash, I won’t marry you.” His cold words shattered her dreams in an instant.
Jade looked up in disbelief, her voice trembling. “How is that possible? We… we were meant to be…”
Seeing her crushed expression, Calvert rubbed his temples and said slowly, “I’ve always seen you as a sister; I never had any other feelings.”
Before Ash came along, he had only agreed to her invitations to keep Dorothy calm. But it turned out Dorothy was fixated only on Ash.
“No way! Have you changed your mind?” Jade couldn’t accept this outcome. “Before Ash showed up, everyone thought I was your fiancée. Did she seduce you?”
“It has nothing to do with her,” Calvert replied flatly. “Whether it’s you or Ash, I’m not marrying either of you.”
Jade felt her heart sink, her face pale as she lifted her chin defiantly. “Why?”
She couldn’t understand what made her inferior to Ash. ‘Why is it that as soon as Ash appeared, he said such heartless things?‘
After a moment of thought, Calvert looked at her unstable emotions but chose not to reveal the truth. ‘What if she ever let slip in front of Grandma…‘
Calvert’s voice turned icy. “Our relationship ends here.”
Jade stared at the familiar, indifferent face of Calvert she thought she knew, feeling as if she
PF
as seeing him for the first time.
“Did
you
really never love me at all?” she bit her lip, asking one last time.
Calvert shook his head. “Never.”
His unwavering words and indifferent expression made Jade realize that everything had been her wishful thinking.
Tears streamed down her face as she grabbed a napkin from the table to wipe her eyes, trying to maintain her last shred of dignity.
When she looked up again, all she saw was Calvert’s cold expression, devoid of any compassion.
Her heart ached like it was being sliced open, while Calvert seemed utterly indifferent.
Jade suddenly wondered if he could ever feel anything for anyone. ‘Could his recent public displays of affection with Ash have been merely an act to pacify Dorothy?‘
Considering this possibility, Jade’s pain eased slightly. ‘If he doesn’t love me or Ash, then maybe I still have a chance.
Pretending to tidy her appearance, Jade discreetly slipped the pills she had into her nails and flushed the packaging down
the toilet.

Chapter 27
When she emerged, she wore a soft smile, her eyes slightly red. She lifted her coffee cup. “Calvert, thanks for taking care of me all these years.”
At the Moreno family, Dexter paced anxiously in the living room
“Shadow Ventures hasn’t responded at all and won’t let us in. What do we do now?” Lorelei fretted beside him. She had thought Shadow Ventures‘ withdrawal was temporary, but they had completely cut ties with the Moreno family.
Whether she or Dexter approached Shadow Ventures, they were flatly turned away.
Without Shadow Ventures‘ investment, the Moreno family couldn’t handle the subsequent cash flow crisis.
Dexter racked his brain for every possible solution. After losing Shadow Ventures, many companies refused to collaborate with him, leaving him completely isolated.
Suddenly, he thought of someone.
