Nathan was surprised Alice was actually going through with the lawsuit.
Alice found it amusing. “People should pay for their mistakes. I didn’t force Chloe to steal my stuff.”
Nathan put on a wry smile. Even if you sue, you won’t find a good lawyer now. Why do you humiliate yourself?”
Jack’s voice was icy. “We’ll see in court.”
He had hired the best lawyer. It would be a sure win.
Then Jack took Alice’s hand and said, “I’m hungry. You still owe me a meal.”
Alice didn’t refute. He walked away with Jack.
Noah didn’t follow up, so she asked Jack, “When did I owe you a meal?”
“The car accident. Ring any bells?”
Alice remembered. Jack had almost been hurt because of her, and she had promised to treat him to dinner once he
recovered.
She said, “Right! I remember.”
“Glad that you have a heart.”
“What do you want to eat?”
Jack’s gaze locked on hers.“Anything that you can agree.”
Alice felt that his gaze was different.
Or maybe she was imagining it. Jack was always good at hiding his emotions.
Alice shrugged. “I’m broke right now. It can’t be too expensive.”
“What do you usually like?”
“I heard a new restaurant opened near campus. It’s good. Want to go?”
Jack nodded regally.“Private room.”
He was quite demanding.
Jack liked quiet and was a bit of a neat freak.
Alice booked a private room, and they walked there, side–by–side. But they kept a distance.
Alice checked her navigation and realized they were off course.
She stood still and checked the map.
Jack came up beside her.“Lost turtle?”
“The GPS is wrong.”
“You’re just bad at reading it. Give it to me.”
Jack took her phone, glanced around, then closed the navigation app.“Follow me.”
“You’re not using the GPS? Can you remember the way?”
“Remembering a route is easy. Just follow me. Lost lamb.”
Alice poked him in the lower back.“Don’t give me nicknames.”

Jack sucked in a breath, and his eyes were deep “Don’t touch a maris waist.”
“What? Ticklish?*
She poked him again Jack caught her hand.“Any more of that, and you’ll be held responsible?
She met his deep gaze, then lowered her head.“I wasn’t touching, just poking”
Her voice trailed off.
Jack released her hand and continued walking, but he was no longer calm.
Alice followed. They rounded a corner and arrived at a restaurant.
They entered the private room.
The boss came in with a menu.“We’re busy tonight. I apologize for any inconvenience. Please have a look at the menu.”
Jack sat down without taking the menu. Instead, he looked at Alice,
The boss then offered it to Alice.“Your boyfriend is so thoughtful. He let you order. Sorry for that.”
Alice took the menu. Before she could explain, the boss left.
She looked at him.“What do you want to eat?”
“Up to you.”
Alice knew his preferences, so she ordered several dishes, including some specialties.
Silence fell over the private room.
When Alice looked at her phone, she felt Jack’s gaze on her constantly.
She looked up and met his eyes.
They didn’t speak. He rotated the table to get a fork for her.
His hands were pretty, and his every move was elegant.
“What are you looking at?”
Jack set the plate and fork in front of her. Alice tilted her head.“You’re so pretty, I can’t help but look.”
He narrowed his eyes. “Is that your way of insulting me?”
A man was pretty. Really?
“No, you’re really handsome.”
“Am I your type?”
Hearing it, Alice dropped her fork, and it fell onto the floor. She fumbled to pick it up in a panic.
Had he noticed something?
Or was he intentional?
Alice picked up the fork, but Jack took it and replaced it with his own.
Jack got a clean one for himself.
Alice didn’t answer his question, and he didn’t press it as if he’d never said anything.

Alice’s hand paused. She looked at Jack.
She was anticipating but also apprehensive.
Jack glanced at her expression.“His family, especially his mother, has always disapproved of his gaming. If anyone could make him quit, it would be his mother.”
He’d never even considered making John quit!
Alice was stunned. John’s mother?

It was probably a wrong guess.
“Disappointed?”
Jack caught the clear disappointment on her face.
Alice shook her head.“No, it’s getting late. Let’s go.”
Jack stood up with his gaze lingering on her. “Are you that determined to win?”
“Even if I wanted to win badly, I wouldn’t use those tactics.”
Jack agreed, but Alice’s question still felt strange.
