Alice’s mind went blank as Jack leaned closer.
Then, voices from outside broke the spell.
They both straightened. Alice escaped his arms and fled the restroom without looking back.
Jack stayed put.
His gaze darkened as he touched his lips unconsciously.
Jack couldn’t control his impulses.
He had the urge to be near her, to hold her, and to kiss her.
He leaned against the wall, rubbed his arm, and lit a cigarette.
Alice ran out and rubbed her face.
She examined herself in the mirror, her face red.
Alice splashed cold water on her face, trying to regain composure.
She walked out of the washroom and glanced towards the stairwell, wondering if he’d come out.
She didn’t go to check but returned to the office.
Almost everyone was in the meeting room.
Andrew, noticing Alice’s flushed cheeks, felt confused.
He wondered, “Why does she come back so quickly?
“Jack must have done something to her.”
Alice remained silent with her head down.
Andrew said, “Let’s begin.”
The representative said, “Mr. Wilson isn’t here yet.”
Alice felt Andrew’s gaze on her when Jack was mentioned.
Andrew smiled.“Let’s start without him.”
Alice, momentarily distracted, quickly refocused on the documents.
She presented her solutions for the bugs and a specific blueprint.
Work helped her forget what had happened.
Andrew, watching Alice’s focused demeanor, texted Jack, “We’re in the meeting. Where are you? Alice recovered quickly. Share your comfort secrets.”
Jack replied with a single word, “Scram!”
Andrew smirked and wondered, “Didn’t he say he didn’t need to comfort her?
“But he rushed over. What a hypocrite.”
After the meeting, Alice went to get coffee.
She noticed Jack was back in his office.
When she saw him, she quickly averted her gaze.

Jack stood up.“I’ll walk you out.”
“No, I’ll take a cab.”
Alice hurried away.
Jack watched her go, hearing Andrew say, “How did you comfort her? She looks like a mouse seeing a cat!” “You’re single. Mind your business.”
Jack left the meeting room.
Andrew was astonished.“You called me ‘single‘? Aren’t you single, too?”
Jack was far from getting a girlfriend!
Alice felt relieved in the elevator.
But the doors reopened.
She saw a man’s long legs.
She knew it was Jack.
Alice’s face flushed as she saw his reflection.
She felt that time hung heavy on her hands.
The elevator finally reached the ground floor. And Alice practically tried to flee.
Jack stopped her, cornering her.
He looked down at her.“What are you hiding?”
Alice, startled, whispered, “Let me go.”
“Answer my question first.”
“I am not hiding. I need to take a cab.”
Jack said softly, “I, drove here today.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“I can drive you home.”

Alice stared at him flustered.
The doors opened again as voices came from outside.
She pushed him away, afraid of being found by others.
But he was unmoved. “I’ll drive you home.”
His tone left no room for negotiation.
The elevator opened. The voices outside stopped.
Alice, flustered, said “Fine, just move.”
Jack slowly moved aside, glaring at the people outside.
They asked Alice, “Need help?”
Alice shook her head. No, thank you.”
She fled.
Jack said to the onlookers “Never seen anyone comfort his girlfriend?”
Then he walked away.
The onlookers were confused.
Alice walked on, mortified.
What was wrong with Jack?
Jack rolled down his window.“Get in.”
A bit angry, Alice ignored him.
Jack followed slowly. “You won’t get home with your speed.”
I’ll take a cab!
Alice walked out of the garage, with Jack following. He was a bit anxious.“Alice, get in the car!”
Alice ignored him and saw a cab nearby.
She got in the cab.
Jack watched her go and pulled up, texting her, “You’re mad?”
Alice sent a meme of someone beating someone up.
He had been so bold in the elevator!
He sent a meme of someone kneeling and apologizing.
Alice smiled. He was getting better at this.
Her phone rang.
But she hung up.
Another call came. She didn’t answer either.
The callers were Ethan and Luke.
After a while, Mike called.
Alice hesitated, then answered.
Mike had been one of the few who had helped her in her past life.
