Alice was startled by Jack’s sudden braking.“What’s wrong?” she asked with doubt.
She thought something had happened.
“I was distracted,” Jack said with his eyes looking forward, his mind a blank.
Jack wondered, “Has Alice’s family found out?”
He wished the drive were longer.
Once Alice got the truth from Noah in the hospital, things would change irrevocably between them.
The drive was smooth; no traffic jams.
Alice saw the hospital. She said to him, “You can go. I’ll take a cab back.”
“I’ll wait,” Jack said, his gaze intense.
He wanted an answer for himself.
Alice nodded and got out, but Jack called out, “Alice.”
She returned. He seemed hesitant. So she returned to the car.“What?”
Jack’s hands were sweaty out of nerves.
He said, “Nothing.”
“Spit it out.”
“No matter what happens, I’ll always be your strongest support.”
Alice smiled faintly.“I know. I’ll text you if anything happens.”
She returned and went inside. Jack watched her go, his expression complex.
He lit a cigarette, feeling the agonizing wait.
This day had finally arrived.

Alice entered Noah’s room and saw Mike urging him to eat.
Noah was overjoyed when he saw her.“Alice, you came! Did you eat? I should’ve sent Mike to get you.”
“No, I decided last minute,” Alice said coldly.
“I want to know about the accident.”
“Ms. Alice, let him eat first. His stomach…”
“No, I’m not hungry. Don’t keep Alice waiting,” Noah interrupted and lifted the quilt, trying to get out of bed.
Alice noticed his bruised hand due to the treatment. She lowered her eyes.“Eat first.”
Mike was happy. “Boss, Ms. Alice wants you to eat. You’ll do as she wants, right?”
Noah hesitated, sat back, and then ate with the fork.
He wiped his eyes suddenly.“It’s been a long time since we ate together as a family.”
He remembered Alice cooking at their family gatherings.
She even catered to everyone’s tastes.

Since she left, there hadn’t been any family gatherings. The villa in Washington was empty.

Alice said nothing.
Since Noah started to eat, Mike said happily to Alice, “He hasn’t eaten properly. Only you can persuade him.”
“Don’t flatter me,” Alice said sharply, sensitive to such comments.
Mike apologized.“I didn’t mean that.”
After Noah finished eating, Mike left with the tableware.
Alice spoke as she looked at him.“Now, can you tell me?”
“Alice, the investigation is over. If you don’t remember, why do you have to know it? It’s a burden.”
That’s why they hadn’t told her.
Alice frowned. “I’m an adult now. I have a right to know.”
“Fine. Did Caleb say there was someone else in the car? That person is from a powerful Washington family.”
“Who is it?”
Noah shoo
his head.“No idea. The road was new. No cameras. It was night. That person escaped.”
“But if someone
in the car, that person didn’t drive, right?”
The driver ran the red light.
Noah nodded.“True. But that person ran away. That makes me suspect that person was the driver. Why would that person run away?”
Alice agreed.
Unless that person was guilty…
Alice frowned.“I can’t remember. I don’t know if the driver was the culprit. Were you disappointed in me?”
Her Mom and Dad forgot her birthday cake.
But she wanted cake, and they took the new road to save time. That was why the accident happened.
The door was opened. “Yes, we were disappointed,” Ethan said, entering the room with Caleb and Luke.
Noah’s face changed.“Ethan, why did you come?”
“I’m glad I came. Alice has the nerve to ask.”
Ethan glared at Alice.“Caleb told you something. You think you can atone by finding the culprit? Will that bring Mom and Dad back?”
Alice’s eyes welled up.
Noah stepped in front of Alice.“Ethan, that’s too harsh. She was a child. What’s her fault?”
Caleb added, “Alice is rebellious, but we can teach her. She’ll learn.”
Caleb tried to cool Ethan down. He believed they could make her a good girl as they wanted.
“I can’t teach her. She’s grown bolder,” Ethan said sarcastically.
Caleb looked at Alice with a half–smile.“You’re wrong. You made a huge mistake. We suffered in silence. Ethan came to Washington to find the culprit. What did you do? You almost ruined his company!”
Alice wiped away her tears.

She looked at Caleb.“I didn’t force them to break the law! It’s not my fault!”
“I know Luke and Chloe were wrong. Chloe apologized. Now, I’ll make Luke apologize. We should work together to find our place in Washington and find the culprit and avenge Mom and Dad. OK?”
“I’ll avenge them. I can’t control the lawsuit.”
Alice wouldn’t fall for it. She knew Caleb’s purpose.
Caleb sighed, looking at Luke.“You believed Chloe’s bad ideas. You deserve this.”
Luke was silent.
Ethan said unhappily, “Caleb, what do you mean? Chloe is young. Her father saved Mom and Dad at the cost of his life. We shouldn’t let her go to jail.”
“Ethan, you’re obsessed with fame stuff. You’ve already compensated Chloe. Alice is our sister. Chloe used underhanded tactics. She deserves a lesson.”
Caleb had seen the video and surprisingly knew Chloe’s true nature.
If she hadn’t saved him, he would’ve banished her.
Ethan frowned.“No. We decided Luke would take the blame.”
Caleb looked at Luke.“Say something! Your release is almost up! It’ll be too late.”
Luke looked up at Alice slowly.
He’d lost everything and realized his mistakes.
Alice didn’t look at him and walked to the door.
Ethan said, “I found a lead on the person who ran away.”
Alice’s heart sank.“Who?”
She looked back.
“You can know the lead, but Luke won’t go to jail. Choose.”
