Ethan followed Alice to the door.
“Alice, stop!”
“Your words don’t hold weight. I have no reason to stay.”
Alice showed no respect.
Ethan’s face tightened. “I must have misheard. I misunderstood about who hit you.”
If Alice left, what would happen with Caleb and Luke? Ethan couldn’t bear the responsibility.
Alice smirked.“Did you mishear, or did someone deliberately mislead you?”
Ethan’s voice lowered down.“Does it matter?”
“It matters. You always glossed over things, but I won’t tolerate it anymore. We need to clarify.”
Caleb pulled Chloe forward.
Caleb glared at Chloe.“Repeat what you told Ethan.”
Chloe nervously looked at Ethan.“Ethan, I… I didn’t say Alice hit me.”
Ethan felt uneasy.
While Chloe hadn’t explicitly blamed Alice, her tone implied it.
Thinking for a while, Ethan said to Alice, “I misheard your words. Is that better?”
“Ethan, if so, you should apologize to Alice.”
Noah stepped forward. “Ethan, you assumed Alice was wrong. That’s your fault. Alice suffered a lot because of our assumptions. Don’t let it happen again.”
Ethan was reluctant. He was the eldest brother. Why should he apologize?
Chloe saw Ethan’s hesitation. She hurriedly said, “Ethan is our eldest brother. It’s my fault that I misled him. I’ll apologize.”
Ethan felt relieved when Chloe offered to take the responsibility. He had been prejudiced against Chloe.
As Chloe approached Alice, Alice slapped her.
Chloe was stunned.
Alice rubbed her wrist.“Since you apologized, it’s your fault. The slap is for your good.”
Chloe screamed,“For my good?”
“Yes. Your vague statements will easily cause misunderstandings. I’m helping you. Be grateful.” Alice helped Chloe up and said sweetly, “Don’t speak vaguely anymore. I don’t want to hit you
again.”

Seeing Alice’s gentle look, Chloe felt a chill run down her spine.
Alice was more intimidating now. What was she up to?
Chloe looked at Ethan.“Ethan!”
Ethan cleared his throat.“Alice’s right. She helped you up. She wants to get along with you.”
Chloe was furious.
Alice’s actions showed no sign of reconciliation. But Chloe didn’t dare argue with Ethan.
Alice deliberately wiped her hands on Chloe’s clothes.
Chloe’s head swam with rage. Alice was pretending to reconcile to take everything from her.
They returned to the dining hall. Davis approached.“Mr. Ethan, shall we serve dinner?”
Alice’s gaze hardened when she saw him.
She didn’t know Davis was in Washington.
Davis noticed Alice’s stare but avoided her eyes.
At the table, Chloe went to pull out a chair, and Alice directly sat down.“Thank you!”
Chloe said angrily, “That’s my seat!”
“Is it? I prefer this seat.”
Alice refused to move.
Caleb said, “Chloe, Alice’s just returned. Be kind to her.”
Noah added, “Any seat is fine. Chloe, sit here.”
Chloe burst into tears. She used to steal Alice’s seat, and her brothers would defend her.
Now, it was her turn to be scolded.
Ethan remained silent. Chloe reluctantly moved, feeling humiliated.
Alice noticed Chloe’s look of resentment. Perfect.
Davis served the meal.
Alice dropped her fork. She looked at Davis.“Get a new fork for me.”
Davis soon did what Alice asked.
“Davis, what’s wrong with the kitchen? This food is awful. Don’t you welcome me back?”
Davis retorted, “Ms. Alice, the chef prepared these dishes. They should be delicious.”
“I find them not.”
Alice’s gaze was sarcastic.“You’re incompetent. We need a new butler.”
Chloe hurriedly said, “But Davis has worked here for over ten years. Everyone’s used to him. Why replace him?”

Alice was firm.“I don’t want to see him.”
Not sure what to say, Ethan looked to Noah.
Noah said, “If Alice doesn’t like him, let’s replace him. But he’s worked here for ten years. He can return to the house in New York. Ethan, what do you think?”
Ethan considered it as a trivial matter. Before, he would’ve made Alice yield.
But now, Alice had a quick temper. Angering her meant another conflict.
Ethan weighed up the pros and cons. He decided to agree with Noah.
He nodded.“Fine.”
“Ethan, don’t send Davis away!” Chloe panicked.
Chloe got anxious when Ethan compromised.
Ethan looked impatient.“Chloe, be reasonable. Davis is from New York. It’s best for him to
return.”
“But he’s like family! I don’t want him to leave.”
Chloe clung to Ethan, hoping for his sympathy.
Ethan pushed her away.“Do as Noah said.”
Davis was just a butler. It was no big deal.
Noah said to Chloe,“If you can’t bear to part with Davis, go back to our hometown with him.”
Chloe fell silent. She didn’t want to go back to New York.
Without the butler, she couldn’t manipulate things.
The new servants were all fawning over Alice and ignored Chloe.
Chloe ate little. Her face was sullen.
Fueled by Chloe’s misery, Alice enjoyed her meal.
After dinner, Ethan said to Alice, “Since you’ve reconciled with us, drop the charges and clarify things publicly.”
“No rush. Take it slow.”
Alice wouldn’t blindly obey. Ethan would likely renege.
She left the dining room.
Ethan put down his fork.“Alice’s temper is getting worse. Chloe, you’d better avoid irritating
Alice.”
Chloe ached with anger. She watched Alice’s back and decided to deal with Alice tonight.
