Chapter 8
Alup’sryer widened. He was speaking up for her? Did he believe her? Her eyes welled up. Even a stranger understood what her brothers didn‘
or didn’t want to.
Chloe’s expression frore. She gritted her teeth. What was the doctor implying? Didn’t he see she was sick and will trying to get Alice lunch? Why wasn’t he swayed by her kindness and was defending Alice instead? This wasn’t supposed to happen.
Chloe couldn’t speak, only lowering her head dejectedly
Calch stepped forward to defend Chloe “Chloe came to class even though she’s sick because the exams are in less than a hundred days, and she can’t miss classes. She was trying to reconcile with Alice, but some people are ungrateful”
Alice felt ironic. That morning, Caleb had told her to take care of Chloe, to fetch water and food. Didn’t doing that take time away from studying? He knew the exams were in less than a hundred days. But her exams were less important than Chloe’s
Noah said, “Caleb, take Chloe home to recover”
“Noah!”
“Are you disobeying me?”
Caleb shut up and left with Chloe.
The infirmary fell silent again.
Noah frowned.“Alice, if you don’t want to take care of Chloe, fine, but don’t do anything like this again.”
Alice kept her head down; her throat hurt; she didn’t want to speak. She pulled the blanket over her head. She didn’t want to see them.
“Alice, if you keep acting up, I can’t protect you anymore.” Noah was also annoyed. He pulled back the blanket.“Come home with me!” He had to talk to Alice. Chloe couldn’t keep getting hurt.
Jack stopped Noah, his gaze cold.“She needs to finish this IV before she can leave. Family, wait outside!” His tone brooked no refusal.
Alice looked up, surprised, seeing him standing before her brother, his figure tall and imposing. She noticed a scar on his wrist, red and ugly, strikingly noticeable he had a similar scar on her leg from the car accident. Had he been in one too?
Noah wasn’t intimidated.“I’m her brother. I’m taking her home; we have a doctor.”
“If you have a doctor, why did you let her have a fever for so long?”
Seeing Alice’s pale face, Noah stammered, “She didn’t say she was sick.” And he had tried to touch her forehead that morning; she’d avoided him. Was he to blame? Maybe she’d deliberately prolonged her illness to avoid responsibility.
Jack’s voice was displeased.“Sir, if you try to take her away, I will report you for child abuse. And legally, if a child is abused, they can apply for personal protection.”
“I’m her brother, her guardian!”
“But I saw you hit her. There’s surveillance footage. I believe the police will make the right judgment.” Jack was calm and unwavering.“She doesn’t want to go with you, and you have no right to force her.”
Alice’s heart trembled slightly. She secretly glanced at the man standing in front of her.
