Luke’s angry words sent shivers down the team leader’s spine.
He thought if this newbie had some powerful backing.
Chloe approached.
“Luke, what’s happening?”
Luke berated the team leader.“This idiot hit Alice! Fire him.”
The team leader stammered, “It wasn’t me! The newbie hit me first. I was defending myself.”
Chloe, pretending to be innocent, said, “But she’s a girl. You shouldn’t be so petty.”
The team leader didn’t dare argue. Luke was clearly supporting the newbie, and he didn’t know their relationship.
Chloe tugged at Luke’s sleeve. “Luke, firing someone shouldn’t be so impulsive. This is a company.”
Luke looked at Alice. His tone was stiff.“What do you think?”
Alice was impassive. “I don’t care.”
She grabbed her bag and left.
Luke was furious. “What’s her attitude?”
He’d just defended her, and she was ungrateful?
What a viper!
Chloe–smirked inwardly. After being hurt by Luke, Alice wouldn’t forgive him easily.
This was good for Chloe.
Chloe said generously, “She’s always been like that, Luke. Let’s talk outside.”
She didn’t want company employees to know Alice was their real sister.
It would make it hard for Chloe to maintain her status in the company then.
Since Alice didn’t want the title, Chloe would take it.
The next day, many people stared at Alice.
She knew it was because of yesterday’s incident.
Once she finished testing the software and got paid, she could leave.
A female colleague approached. “What’s your relationship with Mr. Luke?”
“Nothing.”
“I don’t believe you. If you weren’t close, why did he defend you yesterday? The team leader was terrified.”
Yesterday’s events had spread throughout the company. They didn’t expect the new engineer to have backup!
That must be why she passed HR’s screening.
They believed that she was likely Luke’s ex–girlfriend.
Alice stared at her computer screen, ignoring her colleague.

The colleague gave up and stopped questioning.
The team leader arrived, lacking his usual arrogance. He glared at Alice but didn’t dare do anything.
What if Luke defended her again?
The office was eerily quiet.
Soon, the manager arrived. “Everyone, let’s have a meeting to discuss the firewall issue. The big boss is coming for a
visit.”
“No need. I’ve written the patch code. It’s ready for testing,” Alice said.
The team leader scoffed. “You finished that fast? Are you kidding?”
“You’re unskilled, but that doesn’t mean everyone else is.”
Alice retorted coldly.
He didn’t dare hurt her again, only muttering sourly, “Fine. Test it. If you fail, get lost!”
Alice copied the code to a USB drive and went to the server room for a test.
Chloe followed, exchanging a look with the team leader.
Alice started testing in the backend.
But soon, an error appeared.
The team leader sneered.“See? An error. She just talks big. Actually, she can’t do it.”
Chloe pretended to be surprised as she watched.“Maybe fix it later?”
“No need to fix it. Please fire her according to the agreement. We don’t need to hire anyone else because I’ve already written the code.”
The team leader took out a USB drive, looking down at Alice.“Get out of the way. Don’t talk big if you’re not capable.”
He sat down and started the test.
It passed smoothly.
The team leader looked at Alice triumphantly.“How about that? Skill!”
Alice sneered.“Stealing code written by others and boasting about your skills? You’re good at stealing and bragging.”
“What are you talking about?”
The guy was furious and glanced nervously at Chloe.
Chloe said calmly, “He is capable. You can’t say he stole it just because you failed it.”
The manager impatiently told Alice, “You’re fired.”
“Who dares fire her?”
Noah entered, followed by Mike.
Chloe was annoyed when she saw Noah. Why did he have to come now?

Everyone looked at Chloe, assuming she was his sister.

The manager’s face paled. “But she admitted she was!”
“She should be surnamed as Welch! You idiot! You messed this up!*
The manager stumbled.
Noah hadn’t expected this mistake. He looked at Alice cautiously. “Sorry. I didn’t know they’d mistaken you for someone else. I’m sorry you had to endure this.”
Alice’s eyes were mocking. She didn’t need his kindness at all.
Chloe, suppressing her anger, explained, “It was a misunderstanding. I didn’t expect them to make a mistake. It’s my fault. I should have clarified. Noah, I’m sorry.”
The manager was surprised. “Does Mr. Welch have two sisters?”
Chloe, humiliated, said, “I was adopted by the Welch family. Alice is Mr. Welch’s biological sister. I thought you all knew it since her surname was Welch.”
“Ms. Black, since you’re not Ms. Welch, why did you admit it?”
The manager was speechless. He hadn’t expected this.
He’d heard of the adopted daughter of the Welch family but never expected they both would appear on the same
day.
And the fake one even admitted it without explanation. She got them in trouble!
Chloe’s eyes welled up. “Noah, I didn’t expect this. Luke told me he’d informed the company. Alice didn’t explain
either. How could I know?”
Noah was angry. “Why didn’t you tell everyone Alice’s identity?”
