Naomi had once worried her family didn’t have enough influence–so she hadn’t dared write Claire University as her first choice.
If she’d known getting in was just a matter of background, she would’ve listed it as her top pick without hesitation.
At the university gate, a security guard quickly stopped Evelyn’s car.
Evelyn rolled down the window as the guard said, “Only those with prior appointments and registration are allowed inside. The campus isn’t open to the public.”
Evelyn pulled off her sunglasses. “We’re here to speak with someone from the admissions office. My daughter wants to apply to Claire University, so we came to ask about the process.”
The guard peered suspiciously into the car. “Did you get a call from the school?”
Evelyn frowned. “What call?”
“The admissions office already sent notices to all accepted students today. If you didn’t get one, there’s no need to come.”
After all, not just anyone could stroll into Claire University.
Evelyn forced a smile. “That’s exactly why we came–because we didn’t get a notice. My daughter forgot to list Claire University on her SAT application! She’s a special case. Special talent should get special treatment, right? Just let us in.”
The guard blinked, momentarily stunned.
Special talent?
What, a national exam champion or something?
“Hold on, I’ll call the admissions office.”
He dialed the number, explaining everything Evelyn had just told him.

Evelyn answered confidently, “If that Eliza brat got in using our name, there’s no way you won’t.”
Inside the security booth, the guard stepped out again. “May I ask who you are? And the applicant’s name?”
“We’re the Rivers family. My daughter is Naomi.”
Evelyn answered with pride.
The guard relayed the names over the phone–but the call was quickly cut off.

The guard was already annoyed from work and had no patience left for people trying to bluff their way into Claire University.
“Hey! What kind of attitude is that? My daughter’s already been accepted here! She goes by Eliza! You think she got in without the Rivers name behind her? You’re just looking down on people!”
The guard sneered. “What daughter? What’s her name?”
“Eliza. My daughter’s name is Eliza!”
“Achoo-!”
A gust of seaside wind hit Eliza square in the face, making her sneeze unexpectedly.
Colton tossed a blanket at her.
Eliza blinked at the white blanket now on her lap. “This for me?”
“… If you don’t want it, give it back!”
Colton reached out as if to snatch it back.
Eliza darted out of his reach. “No way. I’m cold.”
It might’ve been summer, but the climate here was far more pleasant than back home.
Sitting on the beach, with the sea breeze constantly blowing, she’d ended up chilled to the bone.
“Eliza! Your phone’s been ringing nonstop!”
Henry ran over with her phone in hand.
Eliza checked the caller ID–it was a landline, same as the one the admissions office used before.
She quickly answered. On the other end came the voice of a staff member from the admissions office.
“Hello, is this Eliza?”
“Speaking.”
Not far away, Colton pretended not to listen but was clearly eavesdropping.
“Here’s the situation: your mother came in just now and tried to pick up your admission letter. But since she couldn’t verify your identity, we needed to check whether this was authorized by you.”
Eliza’s
eyes turned cold.
So Evelyn was resorting to this kind of scheme?

To think she’d even try to steal her admission letter.
“I already told you I’m Eliza’s mother! I even showed you my ID! Why won’t you believe me?!”

They’d already spent half the morning being harassed by Evelyn.
The woman clearly didn’t understand the meaning of no–and kept threatening to file complaints.

Eliza addressed the staff member calmly. “Please mail the letter to the address I listed on my application. Do not hand it over to my mother. I have nothing to do with them anymore.”
“Understood. I’ll take care of it from here.”
The call ended.
The admissions teacher turned back to Evelyn and Naomi. “I’ve just spoken to Eliza. She did not authorize anyone to collect her admission letter. I’m going to have to ask you both to leave.”
