When Nathaniel walked in, Matteo lowered his head and said coldly. “Father.”

“Yes,” Matteo said coldly, lifting his gaze. “Not a single one left alive.”
“Good. Very good.”
Nathaniel patted Matteo on the shoulder and said, “Don’t blame me for this. I need someone to handle the dirty business–the stuff that can’t see the light of day. I don’t trust anyone else with it. Only you. You’re my son; I trust you. That’s why I’m giving you these tasks.”
“Yes.”
Matteo accepted each word without protest.
Nathaniel continued, “Don’t worry. When I’m gone, everything the Hartwell family owns will be yours. I’ve already written the will. When I die, you’ll be the successor to the Hartwell family. In Westbrook, you’ll be untouchable. Everyone will know you’re my good son.”
“Yes.”
Matteo’s face showed little emotion. He simply responded to each of Nathaniel’s promises.
“You’re not that young anymore. As your father, it’s only natural for me to start thinking about your marriage.”
Nathaniel looked at Matteo and tested the waters. “Back in school, was there any girl you liked?”
“No.”
“That’s my fault. You barely had contact with any girls growing up. Our business is full of rough men; they don’t know anything about romance. No wonder you haven’t had a girlfriend all these years.”
As Nathaniel spoke, he even sounded a little smug. “When I was your age, I’d already dated seven or eight girls. You should step it up”
Matteo stayed silent. Nathaniel went on, “As it happens, I’ve got someone in mind for you. The daughter of that overseas tycoon. Eliza. You’ve heard of her, right?”
“I’ve heard the name.”

“It’s just a shame she’s already engaged to the Foster family.”
Matteo’s single comment shut Nathaniel right up.
Nathaniel said. “So what? If you want her, take her. The Foster family’s only gotten this far because of us. All their black market deals, the organ trafficking–where would they be without our help? We’ve cleaned up so many of their messes. If the girl wants to marry into our family, you think they’d dare say no?
He softened his tone. “I know you’ve been all business up until now, but the most important thing for a man is to have a family. Lian’er, it’s settled–I want you to figure out a way to make that girl Eliza fall for you. The Sue family’s status is extraordinary. They could be a huge asset to us in the future.”
“Yes, dad.”
Matteo gave a small nod.
The next day, at school, because of his leg injury, Halbert hadn’t needed to attend classes these past few days. To ensure Eliza’s safety, he had assigned several of his bodyguards to stay by her side.
Eliza glanced at the two bodyguards flanking her, then looked around the classroom, noticing how her classmates were all sneaking glances her way. When Halbert was here, at least he helped take the heat off me. But now? I’ve got two bodyguards tailing me to class. Could I be any more conspicuous?
“What’s going on today? Why hasn’t the teacher shown up yet?”
“No idea. Who knows what’s going on? Such a waste of time–there’s a dance tonight!”
“Hope this wraps up soon. I’ve been looking forward to the freshman ball all week.”
Eliza hadn’t been paying attention to campus events and had no idea there was a freshman dance that night.
No wonder that guy Halbert didn’t show up today.
Probably afraid his leg’s still too messed up to dance with anyone.
Eliza sulked.
Just then, the classroom was filled with the sound of girls gasping.
When Eliza looked up, she saw Matteo walking in from outside.
He was dressed sharply in a tailored suit, standing tall with perfect posture. His eyes, cool and detached, carried a quiet depth. At the moment, he wore a pair of gold–rimmed glasses that gave him a dangerously
refined air.
Eliza shivered. Ugh. Bad omen.
“I’m your substitute teacher. I am Matteo.”
Matteo gave a brief self–introduction.
