“So, who are you?” Elara asked. 

“I’m Evelyn’s friend and Jack Hacker’s lawyer,” The caller answered. 

Jack was the man who was prosecuted for rape by Emily but didn’t get convicted. He used to be her boss. 

‘How well–informed! There came the call soon after my first chat with Emily,‘ Elara thought. She agreed to meet with the caller tomorrow. 

After the call, Elara looked at Lysander, who was chatting with his butler, and said, “I will go upstairs first.” She didn’t join in the conversation between Lysander and the butler. 

Sitting in the chair, Lysander watched Elara go upstairs. 

The butler said, “Mrs. Hawthorne seems very busy recently.” 

Lysander said calmly, “Not a bad thing. Without work, she will feel bored since I am away.” 

Elara went upstairs, turned on her computer, and sat down. Most of the time, she worked in the small study attached to the master bedroom while Lysander was in the large one outside the room.

Lysander went to take a shower. Walking out of the bathroom, he said, “I drew you a bath.” 

“Thanks,” Elara responded. She turned off her computer, went to the bathroom, and noticed her toothbrush with the toothpaste on it.

Elara looked Lysander in the eyes as she recalled her nonresponse to his texts, a result of her disappointment and unhappiness. Too embarrassed to share her mood swings with him, she said, “I was busy.”

Elara grinned as she didn’t expect Lysander to grasp the crux of the matter. “I was. It isn’t easy for us to see each other, and each reunion is fleeting. What do you see this place as? Your home? Or a hotel?” 

“Quit your job. In this way, you can see me every day.”

Elara shook her head at this idea and said, “Go, get back to your work. I am busy. When I am busy, I don’t miss you so much.” She already got used to her current pace in life. 

‘As long as we love each other, we don’t have to stick together every day.’ Elara thought. 

After the final adjustment of the tie, Elara found Lysander silently staring at her, so she asked with a smile, “What’s wrong? Are you moved because you finally realize that you have a good wife?” 

Without hesitation, Lysander lowered his head and kissed Elara on the lips. Elara closed her eyes to enjoy this kiss.

Elara stood by the window and watched Lysander leave. Then, she turned around and headed to the bathroom. 

That morning, she went to Jack’s company, and the caller from the day before, Eric Grant, met with her. 

Eric was a middle–aged man, about the same age as Hazel. At the sight of Elara, he took the initiative to extend his hand and said, “Nice to meet you, Ms. Kensington.”
