Elara glanced at Lysander. Seeing his face devoid of emotion yet sensing the underlying care in his words, she couldn’t help but smile helplessly. “She said you didn’t seem to be in a good mood and was a bit worried about you.
“That’s all. No one’s badmouthing you. Who could bear to say anything bad about you, anyway?”
Lysander looked at her, then casually placed some food on her plate. Elara, knowing he wasn’t in the best mood, coaxed him gently. “Come on, eat. No one’s badmouthing you. Really, I swear.”
“Okay,” Lysander replied simply, signaling that he understood. Elara resumed eating.
Lysander finished first, setting down his fork and resting his hand on the back of her chair. He sat quietly, watching her.
It was peak crab season, and as Elara struggled to peel a crab with her slender fingers, her clumsiness was evident. Lysander reached over to take over the task. “Let me do it.”
Sitting beside him, Elara watched as he worked. “This is amazing,” she said with a smile.
“What is?” he asked while skillfully breaking apart the crab.
Elara’s tone turned wistful. “Having you peel crabs for me. I couldn’t have dreamed of this.”
Lysander glanced at her, exasperated but amused. “Are you hinting at me?” He was always busy and didn’t have much time to spend with her.
Elara laughed. “No way. I’m just speaking from the heart. You’re so busy, so even just having dinner with you makes me happy. And now, I can’t even compliment you without you questioning it?”
“Fine, I’ll take the compliment,” Lysander said, sitting beside her as he continued to peel crabs for her. Not long after, Wyatt’s secretary approached them.
The secretary had noticed they were still there and hesitantly walked over. “Excuse me, Lysander.”
Lysander looked up. “What is it?”
“Mr. Hawthorne said he’d like to speak with you about something,” the secretary said cautiously.
“What could he possibly have to discuss with me? If there’s anything, he can just call,” Lysander replied curtly.
The secretary’s uneasy expression remained.
“Got it,” Lysander said, dismissing him.
Elara glanced at Lysander. “Why don’t you go ahead?”
“I’ll wait for you,” Lysander replied.
Left with no choice, Elara quickly finished eating and followed Lysander to see his father. Wyatt had always treated Elara decently enough.
When they reached the private room, Lysander went inside to meet Wyatt while Elara waited outside. Elara found a sofa to sit on, and a server poured her a glass of water.
Inside the private room, Wyatt sat on a sofa, his expression serious. Lysander walked over. “What’s this about?”
Wyatt looked up at him. “You’ve been getting close to Sully?” His tone was stern, and it was clear he was deeply concerned
about this matter.

Annoyed by his father’s interrogation, Lysander frowned. “We just exchanged a few casual words.“His tone remained even, showing no interest in engaging further.
Wyatt studied Lysander, the conversation dredging up memories of his past with Lysander’s mother. He struggled to find the right words to continue.
“Lysander,” Wyatt began.
“That’s enough,” Lysander interrupted. “You didn’t call me here just to talk about something so trivial, did you?”
Wyatt hesitated, then said, “There were some… difficulties between your mother and me in the past. I know I let her down, but…”
“You don’t need to explain yourself to me,” Lysander said coldly. “Nothing you say will bring her back, will it?”
Wyatt pressed his lips together, silenced by Lysander’s remark. He had intended to have a heartfelt conversation about Yessenia, but Lysander’s indifference left him at a loss for words.
Lysander had grown up away from Wyatt, harboring deep–seated resentment toward him. Wyatt knew there were likely rumors circulating about Yessenia, but he couldn’t bring himself to broach the subject.
Wyatt stared at his son, saying nothing more. The silence stretched on until Lysander glanced at his watch. “If that’s all, I’ll be leaving. Elara’s waiting for me outside.” As he spoke, Lysander stood up.
Wyatt looked at him. “Can’t you spare even a little more time to stay with me?”
Noticing his father’s rare verbosity, Lysander retorted, “I’m busy. What time do I have to sit here with you?”
Lysander rarely had free moments to spend with his wife. Besides, he genuinely saw no point in two grown men sitting around in silence.
Outside, Elara sat on the sofa when her phone rang. It was a servant from the Hawthorne family, calling to inform her that something had happened to Felicity. When Lysander walked out, Elara stood up.
She hung up the phone and asked, “All done talking?”
“Yeah,” Lysander replied. “Let’s go.”
“I just got a call from home,” Elara said. “Mrs. Hawthorne had an incident and was admitted to the hospital. I’d like to go see her. Will you come with me, or do you have something else to do?”
“Aubrey’s mother?” Lysander asked.
Elara nodded. “Yes. She’s not in good health, and it sounds serious. I’ll go check on her.”
“Okay,” Lysander said. “I’ll go with you.”
As the two of them left, the secretary entered the room. Wyatt was still sitting on the sofa, his expression severe. Thinking about Lysander’s demeanor, he couldn’t muster even the faintest smile.
The secretary hesitated before speaking. “Mr. Hawthorne, you really don’t need to worry so much about Lysander. He’s not the type to act irresponsibly. He knows how much you’ve done for him, even if he doesn’t show it.”
Wyatt shook his head. “If I’d paid more attention to her feelings, Yessenia wouldn’t have died.” The secretary fell silent, not daring to say another word.

When Elara arrived at the hospital, Felicity was lying in a hospital bed. Elara spotted the doctor and immediately asked, “How is she doing?”
The doctor sighed. “Her cancer has started to spread. We strongly recommend that she stay hospitalized for treatment. Honestly, we’ve told her this many times, but she’s very resistant to the idea.”
Given the current medical advances, the cancer could be treated if the patient maintained a positive attitude.
But Felicity’s biggest issue was her lack of confidence in the treatment. She was unwilling to stay in the hospital.
After speaking with the doctor, Elara entered the room and approached Felicity. “Mrs. Hawthorne, the doctor is recommending hospitalization. Why don’t you let the family know and agree to stay here for treatment?”
Felicity had known about her illness for some time, but she had always refused to face the reality of it.
Whenever she felt unwell, she’d check into the hospital for a few days and then discharge herself.
Looking at Elara, Felicity said, “The doctor mentioned that if I have the surgery, I’ll turn dark and ugly. They’ll cut into my face and leave scars.
“Elara, I don’t want surgery. I don’t want treatment. Honestly, even without surgery, I won’t die right away. The doctor said I could still live for a year or two.”
Hearing Felicity’s reasoning, Elara couldn’t help but laugh. Felicity was acting like a child.
“Compared to surviving, those things don’t really matter,” Elara said.
“They matter a lot,” Felicity insisted. “If I turn ugly, I won’t look like Yessenia anymore. I don’t want him to see me like that.”
Her face was the only thing she felt she had left.
If she became unattractive, Felicity wasn’t sure if Wyatt would even want to look at her anymore. If that were the case, Felicity felt there wouldn’t be much point in living. She’d rather spend her remaining days in her best condition.
Elara looked at her and said, “Mrs. Hawthorne, don’t be like this. You’re even more of a hopeless romantic than I ever was
