Chapter 16
When it came to my brother, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
“He’s incredibly capable and has been the pride of the Lambert family since he was young,” I
said.
Before I could say anything more, Chloe interrupted me, her tone sharp. “So, you think Jameson is impressive?”
The mention of Jameson sent a wave of discomfort through me. “Can we please not talk about him?”
Chloe softened her tone. “Alright, let’s start with your brother. He’s considered a rising star in the Cranbel business world. He’s a pretty big deal. As for Jameson, he’s more of a newcomer. But even together, they can’t quite compete with Tristan!”
I frowned. “Really? My brother is quite capable. He’s not any less competent than Tristan.”
Chloe snorted. “I’m not saying your brother is lacking. But the Lambert family’s foundation just isn’t as deep as the Zook family’s. If you don’t believe me, you should look into it.”
I fell silent. Of course, I knew the scale of the Lambert family. It was indeed much smaller than the Zook family.
other Chloe snorted again. “Forget it. You’re so obsessed with Jameson that you can’t see any men. But at least your head seems to be clearing up now. With Tristan willing to help you, I think your luck is about to change.”
She cackled on the other end of the phone. “If you manage to dump that jerk Jameson, and start something with Tristan, I can benefit from that too.”
My ears flushed with embarrassment. I woke Chloe up from her daydreams. “Don’t read too much into it. He’s only helping me because of my brother. There’s nothing more to it.”
Chloe was about to respond when a knock on the door interrupted us. I quickly hung up the phone.
It was late evening when I opened the door to find a young woman glaring at me from the doorway.
“Wynonna, get out,” she said bluntly. “You’re not welcome here.”
A headache began to throb at my temples. I sighed. “Ms. Camila, I don’t know you. Why are you being so harsh with me?”
Camila shot me a strange look and sneered, “Wynonna, I may be a stranger to you, but you must know Xandra, right?”
Xandra again?
I examined Camila from head to toe and asked, “Are you in the same field as Xandra?”
Camila puffed out her chest with pride. “She’s my senior, incredibly talented, and my teacher’s favorite student. Why do I hate you? Because we all know what you did to her.”
A wave of anger surged through me, though I couldn’t quite grasp why.
I had lost seven years of memories and had no idea what terrible things I had done to Xandra. But the constant feeling of being hunted like a rat was incredibly frustrating.
1 took a moment to cool my tone and replied, “What I did to Xandra is between me and her. What does it have to do with you, Ms. Camila? Who are you to her? Why do you think you can speak for her?”
Camila hadn’t expected me to retort, and her voice rose sharply. “Wynonna, this is the Zook residence! I’m telling you to get out. Do you hear me?”
Fury surged within me as I sneered. “Yes, this is the Zook residence. But you’re not a Zook, are you? What right do you have to tell me to leave? If anyone should be asking me to go, it should be Tristan, not you.”
Camila stared at me with a mocking expression. Tristan? Wynonna, I know you’re shameless, but I didn’t realize you were this shameless. Do you honestly think you’re worthy of him?
“Tristan has only been back in the country for three months, and you’ve met him just once. I doubt you two are that close.”
I was furious and ready to explain, but Camila cut me off. She continued to taunt, “You were a homewrecker in university. You knew Xandra and Jameson were a couple, yet you still interfered.
“Now that Jameson has dumped you, you’re trying to hook up with Tristan? Wynonna, can’t you live without a man? Are you just naturally promiscuous? You’re so desperate.”
She unleashed a torrent of insults, hurling names at me that I could never have imagined.
