Chapter 23
How could I not be angry?
Even if I didn’t have any feelings for Jameson, the fact that he was dating another woman and giving her flowers and diamonds before we were even divorced would make any woman
furious.
I could imagine how I was repeatedly defeated by Xandra’s tricks before I lost my memory.
I said to Chloe, “I am angry, but isn’t that exactly what she wants? Chloe, don’t let it get to you. Let’s just sit back and watch them make fools of themselves.”
Chloe was silent on the other end of the phone for a moment before finally responding, “Wyn, I really feel sorry for you.”
Her voice trembled. “You’re such a good person. Why doesn’t Jameson love you? I’m just so angry. I’m angry that Xandra is clearly malicious, but why can’t anyone else see it?
I remained silent as Chloe continued to rant. Gradually, I felt my tension ease. I said, “Chloe, if you want what’s best for me, please don’t bring up Jameson again.”
Chloe was doubtful. “Wyn, are you really okay? In the past, no matter what Jameson did, you would cry and forgive him. Now that you’re being so rational, I’m genuinely worried about
you.
I sighed, “Maybe I’m just tired of it.”
I found myself having to reassure Chloe that I was fine. I continued to reassure her until my throat was dry, and only then did she finally believe that I was different from before.
As soon as I hung up the phone, it vibrated again. I glanced at the unfamiliar number and frowned. Something in my gut told me not to answer.
I checked my phone and noticed that my contacts list was down to just a handful of names. There were also only a few dozen contacts on my WhatsApp.
It was strikingly clear how few friends I had before I lost my memory.
The phone continued to vibrate persistently. Finally, I decided to answer.
“Hello? Who is this?” I asked, my heart racing at the heavy breathing coming from the other end of the line. Panic washed over me. “Who is this? Speak up.
After a moment of silence, I finally heard Jameson’s muffled voice. “Wynonna, unblock me on WhatsApp.”
My heart skipped a beat as I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling uneasy with this unfamiliar, dejected version of Jameson.
My silence seemed to embolden him. His tone tuned sharp. “Wynonna, I said, unblock my WhatsApp and number! You’re not a child anymore. Stop playing these childish games.”
“I’m not playing games. I just don’t want to talk you.” My voice was so calm that I event found it hard to believe.
The breathing on the other end of the phone grew heavier, accompanied by the sound of wind. I had no idea where Jameson had found a phone or where he was calling from.
After a moment, he asked in a low voice, “Wyn, you’re just saying that out of anger, right? You wouldn’t really want a divorce, would you?”
I remained silent.
Jameson’s voice crackled with agitation. “Speak up! Wynonna, where are you? I’ll come get you!”
I shot back, “Where are you, Jameson?”
On the other end, Jameson sounded stunned. After a moment of silence, he mumbled, “I just got home from work.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Are you embarrassed about lying to me, Jameson?”
He huffed and was clearly annoyed.““Forget where I am. Just tell me where you are, and I’ll come pick you up.
I said calmly, “Don’t worry about where I am, Mr. Brown. Just a moment ago, you were showering Xandra with flowers and diamonds, promising her the moon and stars. And now you’re back to your wife, begging for reconciliation. Do you really think that’s fair to Xandra?! There was a long silence.
