Chapter 38
Fortunately, Jason wasn’t too nosy. He offered a few words of advice before letting me go on
my way.
I quickly hailed a cab and met up with Chloe. Together, we headed to Jameson’s place.
I had to go back to Jameson’s place to collect my things. At the very least, I needed to grab a few changes of clothes.
Chloe chattered away in the car, offering all sorts of advice.
As I settled in, I noticed a golf club tucked away in the trunk. I wasn’t sure how it had gotten
there.
It was solid steel. It felt great in my hand, and I couldn’t help but think that it would pack quite a punch if I ever needed to use it.
We pulled up at Jameson’s place.
As we sat in the car, we took in our surroundings. The place was dark, and it seemed like no
one was home.
Taking a deep breath, I said, “Let’s go in.”
Chloe wanted to join me, but I told her to stay in the car.
She asked worriedly, “What if you run into Jameson? At least I can help you deal with that jerk.

I shook my head. “You don’t need to worry. Jameson is probably with Xandra right now.”
Chloe raised an eyebrow in surprise. “How do you know that?”
I opened my social media account and clicked on a random person’s profile.
Chloe leaned in for a closer look. She didn’t know the person, but her eyes immediately fell on a lengthy rant on their feed.
“That guy is the biggest kiss–ass, and he won’t even admit it. He thought he was so tough when he was throwing punches, but he’s nothing! Does he even remember how he used to grovel? Now, he’s at the arts festival opening with the woman he admires every day.”
Attached to the post was a grid of nine photos, each telling a part of his story.
Chloe was furious at first, but then she just rolled her eyes.
“Why do you still follow someone like that?” she asked. “Why don’t you just fire back?”
I smiled. “Didn’t those guys accuse me of bribing them last night? I did a little digging and found this. The arts festival opens at 10:00 am today, and Xandra is the guest of honor.

Jameson is with her.”
I then showed her the photos.
Chloe was left speechless. “Wow, that’s convenient.”
I grabbed a large bag and said to her, “Wait for me in the car. I’ll need to make a few trips.”
With that, I used facial recognition to unlock the door and stepped inside.

I felt a flutter of anxiety as I returned to Jameson’s place. My earlier composure had been just to reassure Chloe.
Truthfully, I didn’t want to be here, but I had no choice. All my important documents, underwear, clothes, bags, and jewelry from the past five years were still here.
I had spent the entire night in a state of worry, preparing myself for the worst–case scenarios.
What if Jameson refused to give me a single dime? Or what if our divorce settlement dragged on for years? How would I manage to survive?
After a long night of contemplation, I came to the realization that my only option was to retrieve the valuable items that belonged to me from the house.
Seven years ago, I had already embarrassed myself in the affluent circles of the elite. Now that I was leaving, I couldn’t afford to feel humiliated again.
Money was the only thing that could restore my dignity.
So, I needed money.
Taking a deep breath, I opened the door to the second floor.
Great! No one was home.
The silence was unsettling, as even the maids were absent.
I quickly made my way upstairs and began packing my things.
Fortunately, Jameson probably hadn’t anticipated my return, nor had he considered that I might take anything.
Using my fingerprint, I opened the jewelry cabinet and swept everything inside into a bag, including a collection of women’s watches.
I didn’t have time to sort through my ID, passport, and various contracts, so I tossed them in as well. Those were the most essential items.
As soon as I was done packing, I hurried downstairs to hand everything over to Chloe for safekeeping before racing back upstairs.
