Chapter 76
Save for a dim lamp, the living room was otherwise dark when Tristan entered.
Meanwhile, I stood by the window, lost in my thoughts as I watched the traffic outside. It was drizzling. Other than the sound of the rain and Tristan’s footsteps, it was quiet.
“It’s late. Why haven’t you gone to bed yet?”
That familiar voice was colder than the rain outside.
I shifted my gaze away, only to see Tristan behind me. Our shadows overlapped, making it seem like he was hugging me.
I turned around fully to face him. “Could you do me a favor?”
He was a little taken aback by my directness, but then I handed him the invitation that Xandra gave me. Tristan frowned at it. “How did you get this?”
I gave him a simple summary of Xandra’s visit.
Tristan’s expression was icy as he listened. He was probably livid that Jameson had someone tracking me.
“You want me to be your plus one?” he asked mildly.
I nodded.
Tristan stowed the invitation away before regarding me with a gentle look. “Let me think about it. It’s late. You should get some sleep.‘
“Do you think that I shouldn’t go?
Tristan didn’t answer me. Instead, he asked, “Do you want to?”
I shook my head. “I don’t know… I think that Xandra has a point, but I know that I’ll just be humiliating myself if I do go. Everyone would probably stare at me.”
Tristan’s lips curved up in a smile. He looked so handsome when he did so. His smile reminded me of the moon peeking behind some clouds. I was stunned by the sight.
‘Did you like the flowers?” he asked.
I nodded. “I did.”
He chuckled. “That’s good.” He glanced at his watch before pulling my hand over to press a kiss to the back of it.
“Goodnight, Wyn.”
His lips had felt like a gentle droplet of rain. My hand trembled at the sensation.
Just then, Tristan lifted his head. The light outside the window reflected in his eyes, and I was startled by the sight.
Tristan’s grip on my hand tightened as a more thoughtful look came over his gaze. We both knew that we were waiting for the other to make a move first, but there was an invisible wall stopping us from doing so.
When Tristan moved closer, I couldn’t stop myself from taking a step back. I could feel the warmth that I radiated when my back pressed against the cold glass of the window. My palms were sweaty.
Tristan’s gaze shifted to my lips as he slowly lowered his head. Hastily, I looked down.
“We can’t… This is wrong.”
He stopped. Internally, I was ashamed and upset. Ashamed that I couldn’t stop myself, and upset that I probably still loved Jameson. Why else was I rejecting Tristan?
All of a sudden, Tristan smiled. “It’s alright, Wyn. I’ll respect your decision. I don’t want to make you do anything that you’re uncomfortable with.”
He then pressed a soft kiss to my forehead before leaving.
I remained rooted by the window, stunned as I rubbed a hand over where his lips had been. Though I previously had been somewhat calm, my heart was now a mess.
