31: It’s Not Safe

Nadia looked between the two of us with expectant eyes, and a fearful thought crossed my mind.
I still didn’t completely know why Aidan chose to leave me all those years ago, but now that he was here, Nadia was head over heels for him, and it had just been weeks.
What if he left us again?
What if things became tough and he decided to break our hearts again? What if he didn’t really want us?
The what–ifs multiplied in my mind until Aidan’s voice cut through.
“I want to,” he said, responding to my last question, but there was this little voice at the back of my head that didn’t believe that it spanned to all the other what–ifs.
As if he was reading my mind, Aidan spoke again. “I want everything. If you would let me.”
“Mommy?” Nadia called sweetly, asking for my permission.
I couldn’t complain about Aidan being dressed formally because. his outfit was casual, yet spoke volumes.
“Well, you will have to leave your car because we’re strolling to the park. Can’t ruin all the fun,” I argued.

Aidan shook his head. “That’s not a problem because I didn’t drive down.”
“How did you get here then?”
Aidan looked down at his feet, and Nadia giggled because apparently, that was funny.
“Oh. Why?” I asked. Aidan always came out in his car.
“It needed some replacement,” Aidan said, smiling, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“Did something happen?” I asked with concern all over my voice.
“We can talk about it later. We would only end up keeping her waiting,” Aidan said as he looked over to Nadia.
I slowly nodded my head, and on turning over to Nadia, I couldn‘ t say no. She wanted this, and I wanted to do the right thing for her.
“Fine. We can all go to the park.”
“Yay! Park!” Nadia sang happily.
I quickly put the flowers in some water before we could leave, and as expected, Nadia refused to leave her flowers back at the house.
She also insisted we add some of her new toys to the bag so that she could play with them when we got there.
In the next ten minutes, Aidan, and Nadia were out of the house and heading to the park.

We were on the sidewalk, and Nadia was in between me and Aidan, holding onto each of our hands.
One look at us, and you would know that we weren’t just some random pair.
Clearing my throat, I broke the silence.
“So why did your car need replacement? Did you run into a brick or something?”
“More like a brick ran into me,” he said, laughing lightly.
“Care to explain?”
Aidan looked at Nadia, and when he saw that she was humming and wasn’t focused on our conversation but more on the stones that lined the walkway, he spoke.
“It was a small issue with Collin. I went to speak with him, but he bugged my car instead, and it blew to bits before I could notice.”
“What the hell!? How… why? Were you hurt?” I asked, shock paralyzing me.
How could an Alpha be that cruel?
“Nah,” Aidan responded. “No one was. It was just a feeble attempt to scare me which didn’t work by the way. And is that worry I see on your face?” Aidan asked, trying to lighten the mood.
I wasn’t having it. “He’s dangerous, Aidan, this isn’t a joke. Who knows what else he might do.”
“Hey,” Aidan called softly, and I turned to him. “Don’t think for

one second that Collin would be able to harm you or her for as long as I live and breathe. It’s just not possible.”
“And when you decide to leave again?” The question was out of my lips before I could put a lid on it.
“I deserve that,” Aidan said, tightening his lips. “But I’ve told your before, and I will say it as many times as it will take for you to know it. I’m not going anywhere without having a clear grip on things with you both. I couldn’t even if I tried, Tara.”
I didn’t respond, I just continued walking.
Thinking about the last thing Aidan said, I realized that there may be some truth to it. I had seen the way Aidan looked at Nadia. I’d seen the love in his eyes and his voice when he spoke to her, but wasn’t that just natural?
We walked the rest of the distance in silence, and when we made it to the park, Nadia ran off to play.
I made sure I kept an eye on her throughout, even as I sat on one of the benches, and she must have had her fill because not up to ten minutes later, she ran back to where Aidan and I sat down.
To my shock, that wasn’t the case.
“Mommy, can Aidan come with me for a bit? I need help with my new toys,” Nadia asked, and Aidan was on his feet before I
could even blink.
“I guess that’s okay with you,” I said to Aidan, chuckling, and he nodded.

“You will have to ask him politely, baby,” I said to Nadia, and she pouted before turning to Aidan.
Wearing her sweet smile mask, she spoke. “Can you please help me with my toys, Aidan?”
“Of course,” Aidan said before she could even finish her sentence. “Anything you want.”
“I’ll keep an eye on her,” he said to me, and with that, they were off.
From where I sat, I watched them be free with each other like they had known each other for longer than Nadia had even lived.
Nadia’s laughter was contagious as they played, and so was Aidan’s. I found myself smiling as I watched them, and at this moment, could anything really go wrong?
Exhaling a deep breath, I brought out the book I planned to read while Nadia was playing, and I continued from the page where I stopped, still occasionally looking toward where they were to. make sure that they were okay.
My phone beeped with a message notification, and I pulled it out of my bag, groaning at the distraction.
I saw that it was a text from Jenna, and I opened it with a frown. Didn’t we just speak only minutes ago?
Reading the messages, my heart dropped to my stomach.
