53: Supposed To Be Here
TARA
I woke up expecting to see Nadia in my room as she sometimes did since I slept much later than she did, but the door was still closed as I left it before my nap, and she wasn’t in my room.
Stretching on the luxurious bed that was as soft as a thousand feather pillows put together, I smiled to myself.
Figuring that I must not have slept for that long, I rolled to the side of the bed and got on my feet, making my way to the bathroom to relieve myself.
Splashing some water on my face to wake me up faster, I went back into my room and checked the time to see that it was past fivé pm already.
So I did sleep for a long time.
Knowing that Nadia would be wide awake by this time or just stirring up as I did, I prepared to go down and get started on dinner.
I decided to first check on her, so I made my way to the next room on the right side of the one chose as mine for our stay in Aidan’s house, as I wanted Nadia to be as close to me as possible in the unfamiliar environment.
She wasn’t there, but her sheets were ruffled, and her slippers weren’t on the floor anymore, telling me that she was already awake.

Checking the bathroom and the closet and not finding her, I stepped outside the room.
“Nadia?” I called, listening closely for where the sound of her voice would come from, but she didn’t respond.
Maybe she would be in the kitchen looking for something to snack on, I thought..
Keeping an unhurried pace, I went down to the kitchen, but Nadia wasn’t there. She wasn’t in the large pantry room feasting for sweets either, where I most expected her to be if not in my room or hers.
I was starting to freak out a little because this was unlike her, but I kept my voice leveled when I called her again.
“Nadia, sweetheart, where are you?”
Silence.
I didn’t hear any sounds coming from the TV, so I went through. the sliding doors over to the swimming pool.
Nadia wasn’t there.
My heart rate was starting to pick up, and my worry quickly morphed into full–blown panic.
Where was she?
1 made sure to check up on her before I slept, and she was soundly asleep in her bed. Where could she have gone within that time?
Running back inside the room, the fear could be heard from the

shrillness of my voice even if I was gulping down deep breaths to keep myself calm.
“Nadia, honey, answer Mommy, please. Are you hiding somewhere?”
I looked around, my neck stiff with fear, and I ran back through the side of the house to check the backyard. All of Nadia’s toys were intact, but she wasn’t there either.
I frantically ran back inside, heading upstairs to search through all the rooms and corners, screaming her name as cold sweats broke out on my forehead.
“No. No. No.” I refused to believe that my baby was missing.
Did someone take her?
No.
No!
Did someone take my baby?
Grabbing my phone and running to the living room, my heart nearly exploded when I found the front door wide open.
“Oh my goodness,” I whispered, taking a few steps backward as my knees lost strength. “No. Goddess, please! Nadiaa!” I yelled, running outside to find the streets empty.
Esme’s words rang in my ears about a packmate getting attacked by a Stonewolf just yesterday, and a chill ran over me, sending my blood–cold.
My eyes glazed over with tears, as I thought about the many

things that could have happened within the time I was asleep.
“So stupid!” I yelled to myself. “So stupid, Tara!”
Why did I choose to nap when I knew that Nadia had already slept ahead of me for over two hours?
I knew that she’d be awake before me, and I still slept.
How did I not notice someone coming inside the house?
Or did Nadia go out by herself?
To where!?
“Goddess, please help me,” I cried as I ran back into the house to check all over again. Maybe she was playing hide and seek?
She wasn’t fucking there.
The tears came without warning, racking my body in violent
waves.
Blindly dialing, I pressed the phone to my ear as it rang, sobbing.
Jenna picked up before the line died.
“Tara?”
“Jenna, help…help me,” I cried, stammering through my words, fisting my hair and pacing as I spoke. “She’s not here! I took a nap and the door…the door was open, please help me, Jen. Oh Goddess, please.”
Her voice was sharp and direct. “Slow down, Tara. What’s going on? Who’s not there?”

“It’s Nadia,” I cried, my voice coming out loud even if I was trying to keep it down. “We took a nap together, but I woke up to her gone. The door was wide open, Jenna. Could something have happened to her?”
My legs couldn’t keep my weight up anymore, so I plopped down on the bare floor as I cried.
“I need you to try and remain calm, Tara. Do you have any idea where she could have gone? The park? The diner?”
I shook my now heavy head, tears pouring down my face.
“No. No. No. She was supposed to be here.”
“Okay. Stay inside, Tara. I’ll get the guys to start looking. Don’t come out, Tara.”
I shot up to my feet.
“What? Why? I can’t. I have to look for my baby.”
“No, Tara,” Jenna’s harsh voice came through the phone. “It’s too dangerous outside. We just got calls that StoneWolves. finally got inside the pack.” My blood froze. “It’s bad, Tara. The more people outside searching for her, the more dangerous it’ll be for everyone involved. Stay in, I’ll call you every ten minutes with updates, okay?”
My heartbeat trashed in my ears at Jenna’s words, and the black dots that appeared in front of my eyes were the only indication that my heart was giving out.

mercy of cursed wolves.
Wolves that were capable of turning anyone they infected into stone figures.
Weakly bringing my phone to my face again, I dialed another number and put the phone on speaker.
Esme picked immediately.
“Child, I’m hoping you and Nadia are locked inside. The news I’m hearing ain’t pretty.”
Not recognizing my voice as mine anymore, I spoke.
“Esme, Nadia is missing.”
