57: Mad At Her
TARA
Aidan and I hurriedly made the trip to the children’s hospital, and even after he assured me multiple times that Nadia wasn’t hurt, I still couldn’t find it in me to let my worries go. My blood was still so charged with adrenaline that I didn’t even feel the pain from the gash on my hand even though it was still bleeding.
Immediately we crossed the double glass doors of the hospital, I sprinted down the hallway, looking for the first person I could find who would show me where my daughter was.
The place was dead quiet, and it sounded like only a handful of people were in the building, which was understandable because it was already past eleven PM, and no one wanted to run into what was lurking out there.
I sighted an elderly nurse, and I ran up to her.
“Hi, I’m sorry, but I need to see my daughter, Nadia Moon. The hospital called and said that they had her. Can you please take me to her,” I begged, fighting to keep the tears from sounding in my voice.
“Come this way with me, please,” she said, smiling as she
turned around and walked back in the direction where she came
from.
I followed her, and Aidan silently walked right behind us. He was handling his emotions way better than I was doing now.

I noticed that his chest was still bare after he shifted, and I swallowed to focus my mind on other things.
Watching the nurse bring out a record book, my heart raced as she spoke.
“It says here that a passerby saw her right about when everyone was heading indoors after the call that the pack was being attacked by StoneWolves. She hadn’t spoken to anyone since then, and that’s why she was here for so long.”
“Oh my goodness,” I gasped, covering my mouth with my palm.
That meant that Nadia had been here for hours, long before the storm hit.
Why didn’t I think to check here first?
The nurse looked between me and Aidan before she continued. “We got some calls looking for a missing kid, and they left us with a number, so I’ll need you to please tell me your name…”
“Aidan Graham,” Aidan said curtly, and the woman’s eyes flashed up to him. If she recognized Aidan as the alpha, she didn’t say it. “Can we see her?” Aidan asked because even I was beginning to get agitated.
The nurse nodded. “It’s just that I can only allow the person whose name was given as her guardian to see her. With the attack that’s going on right now, I hope you can understand why it’ll be hard for us to let you in.” Her last words were directed at
- me.
“What the hell?” I cursed without even thinking. “Do I really look. like an attacker to you?”

Maybe with the blood dripping down my arm and my disheveled appearance, I did a little, but I was Nadia’s mother!
“She’s the child’s mother, so you will let her in,” Aidan confirmed, leaving no room for argument.
The nurse’s understanding tone came in. “The child also
specifically said that she wouldn’t want to speak with her mom, and would want Aidan instead.”
What!?
“Why?” I balked.
I hoped Aidan wasn’t offended by my outburst, but it was called for. I was struggling to wrap my head around this. She just sent my blood pressure spiking off the scale, and now, she didn’t want to speak to me?
Ugh! I grunted internally, fighting myself to not think or say anything bad that I didn’t mean about my kid.
The nurse replied to my question. “I have no idea, but seeing as she was shaken from this, upsetting her wouldn’t be the best thing to do, so I’ll tell you what. We’ll let her dad in,” she said pointedly to Aidan, and I froze.
Did she just assume that Aidan was her father or did Nadia call Aidan her father?
The nurse must have seen the look on my face, maybe Aidan’s too because she apologized immediately.
“I’m so sorry. I just thought that… you both were…”
I
“It’s okay. It’s okay,” I replied, shaking my head.

She went on, correcting herself. “We’ll let Aidan see her while I attend to that wound of yours, and by the time we’re done, I’m hoping she will be more approachable.”
I turned to Aidan, and he looked at me like it was my call.
I wanted to see my kid and confirm for myself that she was okay, but I guess I had to trust Aidan with her.
The room also maybe spun a little with how much blood I had lost from my injured hand, so I wordlessly nodded.
“Great,” the nurse beamed.
A few minutes later, I had a bandage wrapped around my palm, and the nurse was leading me to where Nadia and Aidan were.
I wondered what he would have said to her during this time, but more importantly, what could have warranted Nadia to make such a rash decision and still have this cold attitude towards
- me.
Aidan was just stepping out of the room, and I searched his face for any signs of anything wrong. I only got a cautious look back, and it was then that I realized that Aidan thought this was his fault too.
The pieces started connecting in my head about how I snapped at Aidan the last time Nadia asked if we were going on a date together. Did he think I was going to do the same thing now?
“She’s okay,” Aidan said, putting a hold on my thoughts. After a calculated pause, he spoke. “I’m not telling you how to handle this, but maybe showing her how mad you are at her right now. would do more harm than good. She made a mistake, and I

think you should make her see this before you take any other action.”
Aidan stepped to the side, giving me room and privacy to see Nadia, and I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat.
Words were on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn’t bring myself to voice anything out, so I simply nodded and pushed the curtain back.
Nadia was sitting on the bed, looking so small, and once she looked up at me with those eyes, all the anger and frustration I thought I had melted into something else entirely.
How on earth could I stay mad at her?
